First, a bit in the way of preface. I'm currently at the Univ of Washington, as a late 2nd year premajor. I started programming as a hobby when I was 12, and have more or less intended all along the way to major in CS or CE. However, things are not the effortless sailing that it seems so many people are able to achieve. In High School, I wasn't particularily great at math I thought, although my school didn't offer too many challenging courses, and so I often got good grades.

Anyone who's at the UW and is in the CS program, or is trying to be, knows that it is hopelessly competitive for those who don't have excellent grades. This is my category; I've got about a 3.25 GPA in my math/physics prereqs (3.4 total college GPA), including the 2 intro programming classes (my sole 4.0s), calc 1/2/3, phys 1/2/3, diff eq, linear algebra, and several engineering classes.

At first I was pretty happy with my grades -- Until I started trying to get into CS, and realized that you're pretty much out of luck unless you have far better grades than that. So now I'm looking at transferring to a university where I'd be able to major in CS.

This is where I really, desperately need help. I'm more or less certain that I want to major in CS, and the math doesn't scare me (much, anyways). What I want is to transfer to a school that has a good CS program, that would still be possible for me to get into. Truthfully, I have no clue about which schools would be a good choice -- the whole college acceptance circus was something I gladly left behind. Many of the choices mentioned here in previous threads are for those who are extremely proficient in maths, and so are probably out of the question for me. It's not possible to retake classes here, so I have to live with my grades as they are. Diff Eq is the only one that I did truly bad in (C), and I fear that it's going to drag me down..I should have dropped. but I digress.

The biggest thing though, is that wherever I end up, I want to be in a CS program that, though it maybe ain't top-tier, is still a quality program, with students who are really interested in the subject.

Any ideas that folks can come up with is one other option for me to check out! If you're in a similar situation gradewise and are in a CS program at a college, what do you think of your school/ the program?

Another related question, is that I could stay at the UW if I instead majored in applied math, while also taking non-major CS classes. Any thoughts about this option, or am I really better off going elsewhere to get a true CS degree?

If you looking to die come to my school, New Mexico Tech. Try U. of Texas - Austin or Georgia Tech if you actually like to graduate.

Our profs like to sacrifice then eat CS majors. Besides our profs are running away like rats from a sinking ship.

start here-it's a list of the "Best Undergraduate Engineering Departments with Ph.D. Programs, specifically in computers."

also, though I didn't pay much attention to CS when I looked at colleges, I seem to recall that the university of maryland has a good CS department...

hope that helps

Oregon State.

Now, before you laugh, let me say something. This school concentrates alot of its resources on its engineering department. They hope to get it in the top 25 in the nation in the next 10 years. This means that they are currently pumping a lot of money into study areas such as CS.

And it has a nice campus ;)

Why don't you look into applied math, information technology, or cognitive science? Those are options that students who fail the gpa requirement at my school seek out (and let me tell you we have a lot of CS rejects including me). Or if you're adventurous, I'm sure there's a program that lets you design your own major and choose your own classes. You'd have a tough time getting into the classes you want but hey, you're learning what you want to learn.

Oh and I go to UC Berkeley.

Since this is only my second quarter, and I didn't have any previous CS knowledge going in, I don't know that any recommendation I make has much weight. Anyways, I attend Cal Poly, which is ranked #1 in CS for a school not offering a PH D...so far it seems pretty good, although I admit my profs this quarter sucked :( So far it hasn't seemed very competative, but then again I don't live in the dorms so maybe it's different for me...good luck! :)
