Personally I don't know why the US government gives aid to any other government, it isn't like we are running a surplus and don't have any problems of our own.

Aid often involves buying from USA. Military aid can involve increasing production to reduce prices or keeping production going to avoid start up recosting.
Or buying surplus (grain to avoid storage/waste, etc)

Aid also involves political blackmail.

Nearly all of the aid is of the military variety. We provide it because:

1. For better or worse, Israel is by far our best military ally in the region. We have a vested interest in the country's security, even if we don't like everything they do.
2. The pro-Israel lobby in Washington is powerful.
3. The pro-military-hardware-contractor lobby in Washington is powerful.

There are others, but those are the main ones.

Israel provides a great testing grounds for some stuff like the interceptor systems. The stuff that's capable now due to that prolonged conflict are leagues better than what we used just a few decades ago.

Up until 1990, Israel was a great supplier of Soviet military hardware.

Also a test bed against Soviet military doctrines.

Some of the success in GW-1 was because of that knowledge.

Lives and equipment were not wasted because of known weaknesses.
