So, what is the US economy going to be like under Trump? Is it going to be disastrous? Will we see good times? Trump has only been in office for 6 months so many of his economic promises haven't come into focus yet. The effects we are seeing are still from the previous administration.

We will have to wait another 6 months to see where we are headed. The dollar dropping against other curriences isn't a great sign that we will see this booming economy that Trump predicted. It could very well be a disaster.

The administration is edging toward trade wars, starting with steel and aluminum. The sane people in there barely kept Trump and the nationalists from outright junking NAFTA (without a repeal of the relevant US codes mind you) until they showed him a map of where he won versus a map of economic impact if he did that.

I do not have high hopes.

Hmm...I totally wouldn't be surprised if Trump credits his "tough on China policy" as helping our exports...nope it has nothing to do with a weak dollar...In fact "our dollar isn't weak, we have the best dollar, really tremendous folks, there's nothing weak about it... Canada and Australia have the weak dollar!"

A stronger dollar is both good and bad but how much of each depends on the overall economy and how strong\weak the dollar is. While a strong dollar makes imports cheaper and is great for travelling it hurts US companies trying to do business overseas or compete with importers. The dollar is up ~25% against other currencies over the last 5 years according to the US Dollar Index and is around a 14 year high. The general view is that while a strong dollar is generally good for the US economy in the current situation the dollar is probably a bit too strong

US economies tend to do poorly when the congress and president are of the same party. Recent examples:
  • Carter and democrat control recession in 1980 (well almost all of Carter's era actually).
  • Bush and republican control led to the great recession with GDP going the wrong way each year of dual control.
  • Even Obama and democrat control didn't do so well at the beginning of 2009.
US economies tend to do well when the congress and president are of different parties. Recent examples:
  • Reagan and democrat control in most of his years.
  • Clinton and republican control in the late 1990s.
  • Obama and republican control in 2011 to 2016 was the one of the longest continual growth periods that we have ever had.
Having different parties in control tends to dampen out one party from doing serious damage. Using history as a guide, I would expect Trump to have a poor economy (it isn't so great so far). But, Trump actually hasn't signed a single piece of legislation to help or harm the economy. So, his complete inability to govern might actually just put us in the same category as if we had different parties in control.
