Retarded. There are vast differences in graphics between goldeneye and red faction 2. No difference between Madden 2001 and 2k4...

Yet another pointless video game editorial.

They're all novelty differences though, having little or no effect on the actual gameplay or fun factor. In fact, goldeneye is a lot more fun than RF2.

Interesting theory... I don't agree with the author's graphical analogies (Goldeneye vs. Red Faction 2, comeon, throw up UT2k4 or something along those lines) nor do I agree with his conclusions but the question is still a valid one. What will the game industry be like in only a few short years time? More than likely someone's going out of the console business this round, and we will only have two competitors fighting it out for your gaming dollars (I think we all know who's bowing out after this next round, too coughNINTENDOcough).
One thing I can agree with the author about is that games have become repetitive and boring. They're only boring to those who have played them before, though. There's always new people moving into the "gamer" demographic so there will always be those who are impressed by the latest and greatest, and who will spend their hard-earned money on games.
I don't think gaming will die out, but it will definitely see some changes over the next 5 years or so.

truly an interesting read.

but as long as there are games like me who'll play 3 different versions of colin mcrae rally, although all may basically look the same to a retarded observer, i don't see the video game industry stagnating. plus you can incorporate new ideas and stuff, although admittedly at one point people will start saying "pah, its been done."

It was an interesting read (especially the insults at the end of each chapter) but I don't entirely agree. I don't think video games are going to die any sooner than MTV does, they've pretty much made themselves part of popular culture.

Until something comes along to replace video games, they're here to stay.

It's hardware push too..

Think about how much more "immersion" and "interactivity" can be accomplished building on previous titles with todays hardware? Take Tribes 1 for example, add in a ton of new vehicles, multi-manned hoverships, constructable bases and fortifications, and tons more...

Battlefield 1942 was testiment to this: skimp on the eye candy and push the core, and it's now quite a franchise...

People are turning off TV to play video games so I don't think the industry is dying. It is true we may be approaching a limit to the technology, DOOM 3 looks great, DOOM 4 will probebly be undiscernable from real images, but people will still be interested in games. The only good part about the article were the insults. "Dung hoarding turd baron"

I think the point he's trying to make is that the industry will crash without a major evolution. We're still playing with the same basic controllers as we did with the NES. The graphics are better and more immersive but the core activity hasn't changed much.

Maybe VR or something will put a new spin on the video game market and change it again.

TV is suffering.. i reckon part of the reason PONTV (plain old network TV) is so racy and pushing the envelope is to attract back the 18-35yr old demographics back from the PC/Console...

Also, from my observations, there is just too much product out there. Seriously, how many times do you go to the store and see all these games you will probably never play. It seems like there are set franchises (ie. Madden, Quake, GTA, Sims, etc.) that people tend to gravitate towards but then you've got all these other 2nd or 3rd tier titles that barely make a dent. The game market is ripe for a contraction. Hell, if Black Isle with all its wonderful games can go under, how can all these other companies besides EA, Activision and THQ expect to survive?

The lack of innovation has been the biggest indicator for me that something big is brewing. Look at the string of sequels we've seen lately. Publishers are not giving the really fresh ideas a second glance. They're sticking with the tried and true formulas. Whats needed is a new genre or two to come in and completely change the market. We've been playing RPGs, FPSs, and RTS's for the last 10 years. The jump from 2d to 3d doesn't change the core of the genre enough to be considered really progressive innovation.

He is WAAAAAAAAAY off. I mean, he has points that you can compare different games with 1 screenshot and go "Oh look they are similar!" So what. Games have gotten better looking maybe only slightly in ways but have also gotten much bigger. Games are more than just pictures. There is an engine behind it.

You would have to be foolish to think games havn't advanced in leaps and bounds.

I disagree 120% with basically everything he said. Games are still infants flourishing. There is no platform only a constant incline.

Edit: I should really explain my point, but theres just so much to discuss. I mean, did you ever hear of a lan party before Quake1? Thats because network competitive gaming didn't exist only a few years back. Since then it has grown and grown. Now there are lan parties everywhere and people winning tons of money. These will only increase in size and popularity.

I agree with skace. The dude who wrote it is jaded and apparently is unable to grasp that people enjoy games in ways different than his own.

compare quake 3 to doom 3 when it comes out and you will notice a difference. A significant difference.. Much more than "arm hair."

LOL, "...and memorizing exactly how many little zombie horsement I have to crank out before I can assault my opponent's base and insult their sexuality via a mistyped text message."

That was worth my time reading the article, if the rest is just drivel. :p

I'll admit, I'm a bit bored with games lately (with the exception of UT2k4). They're all very similar (FPS) and there are no good racing games for PC. Then again, I'm not 12 anymore, so my interests aren't going to be focused on video games (as much ;)).
