I barely even play DOTA2 (I started on LoL and can't be bothered to learn a whole new set of champs) and I'm tempted to buy that.

You get like SIX +25% passive BP bonus from people in the game owning compendium. So you end up with like +150% BP for doing nothing.

Imagine if you bought the Compendium.. every match is like 300-400% BP.

That means you earn items 3-4x faster.

Hard to judge with such low amount of description...

But generally, Source works pretty well on mid-high level machines. It may work on low end ones too, just don't expect it to look great.

I suggest you just try it out. Can't beat free.

I can run it on my Sandy Bridge i5 with a GT540 at 1920x1200 fairly well.
Had to turn off AA and get slowdowns occasionally with lots of particle effects but is quite playable at high settings otherwise.

So for people looking to learn, I highly suggest watching Casts on Twitch in general, but this week there are quite a few high level games for the Eastern Qualifiers (free in Dota 2 client as well as Twitch). It's a good way to learn item and skill builds along with just simple tricks that you wouldn't think of on your own.

If anyone knows where the Western qualifiers are...?

Few people PM'd me for invites and I've sent them. We still have craptons more! Feel free to ask for one or more if you want to play with friends.

Western qualifiers are over, you can view the games inside of the game client though

1. Always go to Dota 2 reddit and they have the streaming schedule on the right. This is my #1 source.

2. You can watch the game live through your Dota client. Click on Watch tab. They also have the complete schedule calendar of ALL Dota tournaments. You can even watch past games with full commentary audio! Valve really did an amazing job compared to Blizzard's SC2 for handling the pro scene.

3. You can watch specific studio's Youtube channels- BTS is the prominent one (my favorite) for Asian scenes. Also JoinDota for Western scenes.

Right now is a GREAT time to watch as The International 3 is well under the way!

If any new players went to que with someone with more experience to help coach - I created a smurf account so we can que into a lower tier game with similar lower skill levels.

This key thing is weird; they give you chests from playing but you can't open unless you buy a key?

I have been playing this for a couple days now and am still getting my ass handed to me. A lot of the old ways of doing things from the war3 days seem to be slightly different, which is throwing me off initially, but it looks like it's going to be quite enjoyable.

Yeah. You have to either purchase a key from the store or trade items you have to other players who have keys they've purchased. If you played and enjoyed War3 Dota, you'll love Dota 2.

It's an awful thing about this game. If you have a new friend they cannot queue with you because they will get crushed by experienced players.

If you are starting out, there seems to be a 50% chance that someone in the game is using a smurf account. It's pretty obvious when half of the people playing buy either no boots, or multiple boots, and one guy has 30 denies.

I want them to add a way to watch someone with no delay. Maybe just see thier viewpoint that way you can't ghost. I just want to be able to coach my friends, because smurfing and destroying their opponents doesn't help them.

I think I saw Totalbiscuit play this.
No offence, but there was a ton of run in, hit, run back for 35 min (for last-hitting or something?) which looked pretty tedious and not a particularly fun game mechanic. I looked into it and this is apparently some sacred cow/enviable skill in the Dota crowd? That's fine, but not sure I'd enjoy it. Seemed to make stuff pretty slow, and a somewhat risk-averse game? And not really in a strategic way.

I could be completely wrong though. I might give it a try if I get a key, or it's finally released, which must be soon right?

It's certainly not for everyone. New players are not risk-averse at all, dying 12-15 times per game. But being cautious is very strategic, as dying can destroy your momentum (and gold supply), but killing others is a huge boost. So it is high-risk/high-reward.
