Yes, i know this was posted in P&N but i know of MANY OTers who wont venture into that pit... so i wanted to post it here and see what responses were given from the upstanding OT members... It provides very strong arguments, and many great points... give it a watch even if you are anti-legalization.

There was a great op-ed by a McGeorge Law professor in my local paper today, discussing the issue. There's a CA state Assembly bill that would legalize and tax it. Here's my opinion: It's less addictive and deadly than alcohol, and we could generate a hell of a lot of revenue by taxing it. Also, I tend to believe that you shouldn't ever ban something that doesn't hurt other people.

This is what irritates me: the fact that you want to "keep people away from it." People should be free to do what they want as long as it doesn't affect others; treat weed just like alcohol in terms of DUIs and stuff. Most people will use it like alcohol - as a way to relax after work or with friends.

And prohibition didn't work for alcohol - it's not working for marijuana either.

Excellent film. Really makes you think about the hypocrisy of some of these marijuana laws in the US.

People on both sides of the fence should watch this whether you are for or against legalization.

I think the biggest problem is there isn't an easy way to test for it. you pull someone over and you *suspect* they're high, there isn't a clear way to test like drunkeness.

I think they should just get everybody on the road high and see if it helps us all drive better. Road rage would be eliminated, although traffic would move slower, there might be less traffic jams.

ive driven with guys who were stoned, its not remotely comparable to someone who has been drinking

I have driven with many people while they were high, most tended to drive better than when they weren't high. They say weed reduces your reflex time, but my friends seem to drive slower and more relaxed. Which if anything should negate the fact they're not reacting quite as fast.

As long as the government is involved in healthcare the government has an obligation to keep people away from certain things. If you wish to cut down government to bare absolute minimum then yes, we can legalize pot.

I'd say it is working for pot. If pot were legal, I would guess there would be 5 times as many people smoking it than now, maybe more.
