Construction of a huge barrier in the West Bank will continue despite a UN General Assembly resolution condemning the project, a senior Israeli government minister has said.

and this is a big one
Meanwhile, Russian officials at the UN say they have circulated a new Security Council resolution calling on both Israel and the Palestinians to fulfil their obligations under the internationally-backed peace plan, known as the roadmap.

In accordance with the resolution passed on Tuesday, the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has to report back in a month's time on Israeli compliance with the demand that work on the barrier be reversed.

If the situation has not changed, then Mr Annan is tasked with suggesting what further actions should be considered.

All this serves to do unless it leads to sanctions or something (no bloody likely) is to give Israel more of a bunker mentality/the world is against us. Not exactly constructive in the long run.

Tnitsuj, I agree that this will give Isreal more of a bunker mentality. But what's the alternative? IMHO, Isreal is the South Africa replacement. It is oppressing the Palestinians. I can't imagine that anyone would disagree with that statement. Yes, I understand that there are reasons but, as bad as it is for Palestinians, the occupation is a corrosive force in Israel's national life. It hurts them! Wasn't being in breach of a single (perhaps 2) U.N. resolution the occasion for invading Iraq? Obviously the situation in Israel is very different from Iraq. I'm pointing out administration hyprocrasy more than urging U.N. or U.S. action against Israel. As you may or may not know, Berkeley California has a high Jewish population. One of the forces in Berkeley and the Bay Area in general are the Women in Black. Once a month these women stand on a Berkeley street and lament what Israel has done and is doing to itself. At one time these women were all Jewish. I don't know if that's still the case. The Women in Black have been active in the anti-war movement. They certainly have my respect. The occupation has certainly taken the moral high ground away from Israel.

Yes. For instance, when is Israel going to let UN inspectors inspect they're nuclear program? After all, Israel is actually guilty of all those things the US went to war over with Iraq. This goes beyond a "double standard".

not really a double standard
israel unlike iraq, israel will not supply nuke to bin laden, will not use nuke at short inpulse.
the world does not trust iraq having nuke power.

That's right, Israel should disregard the safety of it's citizens and it's own national security because the bozos in the UN think so. The UN should be disbanded.

You have a point, Israel is entitled to protect it's citizens. That's why if they want a wall they should build it on the green line. Why gobble up huge swaths of Palestinian territory? Why destroy the livelihood of many Palestinians by cutting olive groves in half with this wall ?

Who needs the UN anyway? It's not like we've used a country's noncompliance with UN resolutions as an excuse to attack them before.

one question, why didnt Israel build the wall on its own borders?

And all 144 nations who voted for this resolution should be disbanded as well? The UN isn't a single entity.

To the Presence thier is no such thing as "Israels borders". Remember? The Palestinians/Arabs lost all the wars.

ChuckieLand. No national government has ever given up weapons of mass destruction to terrorists. Did the administration boogy man frighten you into thinking that Iraq would?

Besides God told them they could have it all.

I never mentioned a word about God on these forums, don't make assumptions.

Why did 144 countries vote yes and only 4 vote no? Don't those 144 countries have any idea of what's going on? 😉

In security issues, it doesn't matter what 144 other countries think. It doesn't matter what 1,000 other countries think. Israel will do what it thinks it must do to protect itself, regardless of what other countries think. And I applaud them for that.

I agree with you. I'm still at a loss, however, as to why 144 countries voted yes.

The Presence. A security issue, huh? How well has Israel's "security policy" over the last 55 years worked out? Hit it, Colt. I'm anxious to learn from your answer.

Well, I can't really educate you myself, being that I don't have the time nor the inclination. I advise you to purchase a ticket to Israel on El Al, and stay for a few years. You may actually learn something.
I'll answer anyway, in short. Israel's security policies have been tremendously successful. Ask any security specialist. However, when you have the amount of attackers that they have daily, some will slip through. Why don't you try looking at the amount of bombers that they stop on a daily basis. They are building a wall now to minimize just that.

ThePresence,
but why isnt the wall on the green line?

The land that is now Palestinian self-governed was given to them by Israel. Israel feels that a tiny portion of the lands it gave away are vital for it's security from the very people they gave it to (as a peace offering). I feel really bad for the guys that lost some olive trees, but I will feel worse for the family that loses 3 children in an instant.

so in your opinion Israel owns the west bank and gaza and are just being nice by allowing the Palestinians to live there?
