The Ultra Company

Ive noticed a few posts about how Ultra is crap but when i researched the power supply and memory i bought from them (550 watt and 2 gigs of memory) i saw mostly nothing but good customer reviews about them. The supply was about 100 bucks and the memory was exactly the same numbers as crucal or kingston but much cheaper(120 crucial/ 159 kingston/ 109 ultra with a 40 dollar rebate to boot).

I assume some of you have had bad experiences with ultra? or just view it as a bargain basement part? OR is there something i dont know?

Dont know much, i just ask questions and learn from doing.

Thanks in advance for the input.

Ultra is not known for being top end parts. Every ultra fan or PSU I've ever owned has failed in one way or another.

Ultra PSU's = nothin but stupi s***. However I can say first hand that there memory does fairly well. I was able to take a 512 stick of their 3200 memory and run it at 230 at 2.5 latencies at 2.8V. So its not terribly bad.

Have seen the Ultra 1GB DDR400 in action. Barely pass Memtest at 208MHz. They used to be the Patriot RAMs. Then downgraded to generic Micron Chip with 3-3-3-8-1T timing without heat sink. The Micron chips appear to be the binned stuffs.

Ultra make some of the worst PSUs available; do some research on the X-Connect.

Ultra itself is a division of Tiger Direct, for that reason alone you should avoid them.

well its a good thing its a crappy machine to begin with. With the addition of the memory and the psu i got over 1000+ improvement with my 3dmarks so i cant complain too much as it was short money. Ill definetly throw it away when i build my own. I admit, they took me in with the shiny box and the 14 cables they sent with it. And it was easy to connect.

Do all psu's come with the cables you need and a 20/4 pin connector? Also do they all have universal connecdtions? (as in, the 14 cables you get with them connect to the back in different places)

It was one of the only psu's i could see with the feature of being a psu for dummies basically. lol

their power supplies and memory have a lifetime warranty. be sure to register the psu online as it will extend it's 3yr warranty to lifetime. although not high end stuff, i would much rather put an ultra psu into any box than a powmax, turbolink, raidmax or other crap company's psu.

I used to have an Ultra X-Connect on a previous build and it worked fine. Their X2 550W PSUs are also very good from what I've heard. There are a lot of people who complained about the 500W X-Connects but it is a problem that they have fixed. They are not quite on the level of Antec, OCZ, or enermax but it's hardly "crap" like some people would claim . . .

Sure Antec isn't the best around but putting them down there with Ultra is a bit much. If Antec is still using Channel Well for an OEM thats a pretty decent source, Ultra gets their units made by the lowest of the low-end builders.

Not to mention the Tiger Direct factor....

Yeah i got a 500W xconnect too and it works fine, although my rig doesnt need much power. I mainly got it for the modular cables, but I hope it can support a stronger gfx card + x2 down the road.
