looking for the ultimate travel bag/backpack:

1. for use traveling in the air, on trains or busses
2. for simple hotel trips, business or pleasure
3. for hiking or backpacking
4. for biking

features i want:

1. usable as backpack with shoulder straps
2. usable as roller bag with wheels and telescoping top handle
3. usable as duffel bag with carrying straps
4. usable as hiking bag that can carry large amount of weight with metal frame to which can be attached any number of other items
5. usable as hiking bag that can carry large amount of weight comfortably and securely, must have waist strap/support so that much of weight is supported by waist instead of all on the back and shoulders
6. usable as a storage bag for long biking tours, would need some way to be attached securely and in a stable manner to a bike frame
7. sized to carry anything and everything needed for long trips needing self sufficiency - clothes, shoes, food, water, electronics, tools, tents, etc.
8. lots of separate pockets and compartments to store all the various types of items, keep them organized and easily accessible without having to unpack everything and avoid mixing dirty shoes with clean clothes
9. a compartent for hanging clothes would be nice (like for a suit)
10. ideally would fit in an airplane's overhead compartment

might be other things id want ill add as i think of them

it seems like such a combination of wants would nearly be impossible for any one bag, but i think what i need to start from is some kind of hiking pack and make do with the best combination of features i can find. for example: a well designed pack frame would let me attach any number of additional bag types (like for hanging clothes). anyone who wants to point me toward the best pack theyve seen, even if it doesnt meet all my requirements, i would be very grateful thanks.

lastly, price is of course a factor, but im willing to pay for superior features

p.s. right now im looking to buy a folding bike that i could carry attached to my new pack when walking, and that i could attach the pack to when riding :)

Until you got to #10 I was going to suggest you just get married. Now I have to suggest you marry a midget.

Rather than spend a ton of money on ONE bag, get a couple of good ones from REI or something.

:p that would make sense except that i plan on using all of the features i listed on a single trip, and id rather keep the luggage to one piece (or at least one piece to which i can attach everything)

Just browse the selection at REI. They have their own brand and several others on their site. I bought a Kelty from them a while back.
