It's not just a tablet. Hook it up to your TV and you get a whole mediasystem aka console.

I love my Shield. With XBMC is great to watch videos and especially internet stream like youtube.

19.75 watt/hour battery is dead in 10 hours during hd playback. So what is the power draw for the device?

I think it looks great for $299. I have no interest in getting the controller but the tablet itself has decent specs for the price. 8 inch is the perfect size for me too for at home or on the go gaming and movie watching.

Yeah, the Shield (1) was kind of a miss, but even ignoring the gaming features that a lot of people don't care about, as a tablet alone 299$ seems good for what you get. As an android tablet alone, that is a pretty solid piece of hardware at a reasonable price for a super high resolution/high PPI screen. The gaming and high performance SOC are added bonuses.

I use an ipad air on the go which I really love, but it sure as heck cost a lot more than 299$ (and it has the same resolution).

Are they really speaker holes? ;)

I'm not sure if this has really been done before, but I think it could be interesting if that's actually four speakers. That means the tablet can dynamically adjust which speaker is left and right depending on how you rotate it. Although, it might be kind of weird in portrait mode since it may sound awkward having the left and right channels coming from the bottom and top.

Honestly, I've always wondered why Apple never did something like that with the iPad -- apart from space savings that is -- as you could potentially do it with 3 speakers (2 on bottom corners, one on top right corner). Mono sound sucks for multimedia-centric devices, but I guess they just intend for you to use headphones? :\

This is pretty awesome. So what you get is one of the world's fastest tablets with some different options too:

$299 base price: 8" tablet, Full HD display, Tegra K1 SoC (2.2GHz), front-firing vented speakers, front and rear cameras, 16GB HDD, 2x2 MIMO Wifi (2.4GHz, 5GHz), Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, motion sensors, microSD card slot, stylus included.

+$100 option for 32GB HDD with LTE

+$59 option for Shield wireless controller for those who want to use the TK1-powered tablet in console mode.

Other than the notion of console mode, this is very different in concept than Shield v1, which was more of a handheld gaming-centric portable device.

Surely this tablet has two speakers (for stereo sound). The holes you see are necessary for the sound to radiate outward (metal grilles need some avenue for sound pressure waves to escape outward rather than reflect back inward). Also note that these speakers are vented (ie. use a port to extend the low frequency response and lower distortion by reducing driver excursion at lower frequencies).

10 hours of video playback at 1080p resolution is quite good for this battery size capacity. Keep in mind that iPad Air has ~ 64% more battery size capacity in comparison, while achieving ~ 13.6 hours of video playback at 720p resolution. Even the iPad Mini Retina has ~ 23% more battery size capacity than Shield tablet.

Battery is a bit on the small side. Will be interesting to see how long it last compared to other tablets.

Also like how they show the gaming performance compared to two tablets with far higher resolutions. Will be interesting to see if those bode true. My guess is after a long run and thermal limits kick in they wont be near that much better.

Still not sure what the point of the controller is.

Was hoping to see if it had their stylus tech continued. I'm definitely going to get one. I've currently got a full-PC style stylus converting tablet/laptop and I'd like something a little smaller, thinner, better battery life but I still need the stylus.

Agreed here. I have no interest in the controller, but the tablet itself should be great. Perhaps I'll put it on my Christmas list...

What decent games are you guys playing on tablets that would make this kind of tablet worthwhile? I've been looking to pick one up sometime soon, but not sure about content. Buying one to watch TV/movies isn't really a factor to me.

NVIDIA showed GLB 2.7 T-Rex and GFXBench 3.0 data at 1080p Offscreen and 3dmark Unlimited at 720p (ie. same resolution tested across all tablets). Shield tablet should have less real-world throttling than a higher res. tablet for games that are played at native resolution (and it also has a frame with integrated magnesium thermal shield, which is a nice touch).

Still not sure what the point of the controller is.

The controller is for people who want to hook up the Shield tablet to their big screen TV (via mini HDMI output) and then play Android games or streamed PC games using a wireless controller (aka "console mode"). Note that the so-called Shield controller accessory reportedly has much lower latency and much higher data rate throughput than a typical Bluetooth controller (not to mention some nice features such as rechargable Li-Ion battery, volume buttons, Android home and back buttons, start button, multi-function button, and capacitive multi-touch touch pad with button).

I love my Shield but I was hoping they would have kept the same clamshell form factor and just improved the dpad and handle shape a little to reduce wrist fatigue.

What we get instead is a thick looking tablet that will suck for games unless you buy a controller. Add up both the cost of the tablet and game pad and you're almost double the price of the original Shield.

I don't understand who they're targeting with this device.

Well you can't have your cake and eat it too, because Shield v1 gaming portable is no replacement for a tablet either. And the price of Shield v1 at launch was $299 USD with Tegra 4, a 720p 5" screen, no cameras, no stylus, and no LTE + 32GB option. Shield tablet and Shield gaming portable are two totally different devices, and the reality is that a good tablet has much broader appeal than a good gaming portable. That said, unless NVIDIA specifically says so, a new Shield gaming portable is not out of the question.

As for who they are targeting, obviously anyone who wants a really good and really fast pure Android tablet from NVIDIA that comes with unique features and nice accessories?

Psychologically, think of Shield tablet as the successor to Tegra Note 7 rather than as the successor to Shield v1. Tegra Note 7 was already quite good for the money, but Shield tablet is literally better in virtually every metric, including screen size and resolution, SoC, build quality, stylus (second gen), cameras, wireless connectivity, accessories, etc.

Yup it's probably something more appealing to the common man than a GPU. Something like the Shield Tab/Controller. I doubt they would do so much to advertise a GPU, even if it's big Maxwell.

But if one wanted to play games at home, the Wii U has a far superior game library. Plus your kids would enjoy it much more than an Android tablet. As a gaming device, this doesn't stand out in any way besides more power. But we know hardware doesn't sell gaming consumer electronics. I seriously don't see why I would get this over Amazon Kindle, iPad or Wii U.

You just don't get it do you. The Shield tablet is a pure ANDROID tablet! Anyone who has invested in Google Play games/music/movies (and there are countless millions) would potentially love this tablet. This is the fastest Android tablet in the world along with Xiaomi's TK1 powered Mi Pad. The Kindle Fire HD and iPads have their own software ecosystems separate from pure Android and the Google Play store.

The Wii U is not a competitor at all to an Android tablet (nor to a Kindle OS tablet nor to an iOS tablet), as it is first and foremost a dedicated game console with it's own software ecosystem (not to mention the fact that the Wii U tablet itself is quite bulky and slow in the first place).

To ask why someone would want this tablet is as silly as asking why someone would want any Android tablet. This is one of the best Android tablets on the market, period. This is not a dedicated gaming tablet, this is just a really good tablet with stylus and with one gaming accessory as an option (wireless controller).

I don't own any Google Play 'games/music/movies' and I can't recall ever hearing from anyone I know that they ever gave said products more than passing consideration.

Not disagreeing with the 'countless millions' claim necessarily as I don't know the statistics. Still...

Looking at the iOS top 20 grossing apps; there's Pandora at #4, a dating app at #15, and Minecraft at #18. The others are all F2P/P2W games. Yeah, I don't think there are that many games that could be considered like a console AAA title when there is so much money being made on P2W games.

The dating app does mention "In App Purchases" but I would think it would be P2L though
