The ultimate gaming rig?

Sonikku

Lifer
I'm building a rig for a cliant how wants the fastest machine possible. He does not care if he's spening an extra $2000 if it means only a 10% speed difference, he wants the best. I have a few ideas, but don't really know which parts to look for. My theororetical build:

Quad 7900GTX Video card setup
4 AMD Opteron "Quad Father" CPU set up
Dual 150gb Raptors running in Raid
NEC DVD burner

Is there any motherboard that can accomidate quad opterons and quad SLI? Or will he have to settle for a single FX 62 or Conroe?

What case could work the best? Money is not really an object.

What PSU would be needed? Same as above. Suggestions needed.

problem with people who want "the fastest computer eva" but don't know enough to build their own computer is that when they see someone else with quad GPU, they will automatically think the person who built their dual GPU system was incompetent and couldn't build a proper ultimate computer, which would mean an unhappy customer.

when quad sli is all debugged its going to be stupid fast. SlI is more than enough. Plextor is the best DVD burner.

Get quad 285s.....damn this is gonna be amazing rig.... and like a board for 32gb of ECC ram.

Well, when talking about quad sli the GPU is the 7900GX2, is something like that, not gtx. Really, you could get 64GB of RAM if you wanted, but he probably wouldn't see a 1% speed difference if any, so spending a couple grand on that little of a difference doesn't make much sence. What would make a little bit of sence would to get a SCSI 15K Cheetah or something similar and run those in RAID0. Maybe 8x 24" widescreen LCDs, and some random $2,000 case would get you in the running for best rig eva.

There's been a dual opteron 940 TYAN board w/x16 SLI for awhile now. Supports 16GB of memory I think.

Dual 2.8G Dual-Core Opteron 940's and dual 7950s would work to make a 'quadfather' I think.

this sounds the best

Why doesnt the client just buy pre-built super high end gaming rig like Inline suggested? It would sem to make sense since what your considering might be alot of work, to set up quad optereons and get that to comply with sli, etc..

A better bet is to get the dual supermicro board from monarch. It's considerably cheaper then the K8WE and is generally considered a better board. Unless you really need PCI-X slots and onboard SCSI, I'd stay away from the Tyan as it's known to have issues. H8DCE

Tyan does make a 4 cpu board with dual x16 PCIe slots but it can't run SLI as of now and one slot only runs a 4x. Tyan

Supermicro also has a 4 way board with dual PCIe 8x slots, I haven't seen much about this one and have no idea if they support graphics cards and SLI. H8QC8 Interesting board considering it has an nVidia chipset and onboard ATI video...but most server boards i've worked with use onboard ATI rage chips.

don't waste your money on rip off computer parts that you think will give you intense frame rates.

1. Just do a an OC on a 3.4GHz Intel Preslar dual core to 5GHz

2. 4GB of 2-2-2-5 XMS sticks

3. RAID 0 with the new Raptor150's which have EXCELLENT command Q

4. X1900XTX 512 Crossfire - INTENSELY OC'D to maximum destruction

5. Think water cooling, it will look very cool with UV liquid (plus add METALIC GOLD coloring to this liquid, and you will never take your eyes of your rig ever again..)

Excellent what? NCQ (Native Comand Queing)? If so you should know that it hurts single user performance.

Just flat out nonsensical.
