With the money he spent on that setup, he could have put a down payment on a used plane.

This is true, but with fuel/maint/insurance costs the price of a flight goes up rather quickly.

For some reason, I think a guy who can afford to drop about $10,000 on essentially an overgrown Playstation could manage to afford gas for a Cessna 172.

And could manage to pay for it by charging people for plane rides every 2 weeks. ;)

That is nothing...there are people who had the entire cockpit section of a soon-to-be-scrapped ex-pan am 747-200 delivered to his home, and built a sim setup in it. You'd think you were in the real thing.

Cessna 172, eh? Not much firepower in those. I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home.

A new engine for a 172 is over $30,000, and you need a new or overhauled unit approx. every 2,000 hours...an overhauled engine is $10,000-$20,000

Every year you need to do an annual...you need to tear the whole thing down, have it inspected, repair or replace anything broken, and re-assemble. $$$$

You have insurance fees, storage fees, airport fees, landing fees, fuel, and on and on. It's not cheap.

You also forgot you can change where you fly and what you fly.

Today it's an Ultralight, tomorrow a 747 out of Hong Kong.
