The Ultimate Case Filter/Intake Muffler..DIY.

'm using a 220mm fan with this NSK 4400, but this case mod could be used with virtually any case with a side mounted fan. I made a completely new side panel, but it could be constructed as an add-on to your own side panel. This is not a how-to, as there are too many variables......but it's a relatively easy mod. The filter is DIY.....an AC foam filter, and a 5/16" thick window screen kit. About $10 at Lowes, or other hardware stores. The plywood panels are 3/16" oak.....fairly cheap. Over-all the thing is about 2" thick. The neat part of this.....the filter just slides out the rear, making it easily cleaned or replaced. I have done temperature tests already with this setup.....with the filter and housing in place, I register about +2C temp increases. Not enough to worry about. The inside of the housing is lined with 4mm acoustic foam. This makes that 220mm fan inaudible to me at 5V. I'm satisfied with this first attempt, but there are a number of variations that could be made...questions?

This device could be painted to match your case. The filter has about 100 square inches of filter material, and should go a long time between cleanings. A standard 120mm filter has a surface area of less than 10 square inches....clogs quickly. As an added benefit, the intake noise is greatly reduced. Better filter materials could have been used, but this foam filter works ok.....

Thats cool, might be something i end up trying for the ladies PC, keep the updates coming 🙂
