The Truth About SLI and Multiple Monitors

Hello all:

Forgive me if this is common knowledge but I wanted to apologize and correct myself for some statements I have made in the past regarding multiple monitors and SLI. I finally got around to connecting my secondary CRT into the second port of my primary card thinking I would be able to run both no problem. And indeed you can once SLI is turned off, and many already know this, as I did myself. However, what I did not know was that Dual View support is no longer available. You can extend the monitor across horizontally, vertically, or even clone them but you can not run them independently, which is what I and many others most likely desire. I have read through the nVidia forums on this very subject and many people have complained about this very issue, and rightfully so. They even stated that SLI would support two monitors in SLI mode according to a FAQ posted on the nzone earlier this year. And to add to the speculation, it seems as though nVidia decided to update their FAQ late last month to state that only one monitor can be supported. Proof? Here is the forum thread at the nzone -> click me, which has the original writing of the FAQ. Notice the date of the post (January 12), and if you click on the FAQ link in that first post it says it was updated on March 31st. Seems fishy to me.

Reading further in that thread it seems that rumor has it the 90 series drivers may fix this issue. However, the lack of feedback from nVidia is disturbing to say the least. They could at least notify the community that they are/are not working on this issue.

This brings a whole new light to the new motherboards from ASUS and MSI that will support SLI switching in software. I orginally thought this would only benefit the initial installation, but perhaps this will allow you to switch to single card mode and thus allow Dual View to return. That is if this is tied with the selector card at all, as I have not tested with the card switched to Single Card Mode. However, logic dictates that this would be a reason for the R&D put into the cardless solutions by the aforementioned companies.

I wanted to just let all those know who are pondering an SLI setup that multiple monitors does indeed work once you disable SLI from within the nVidia drivers, but Dual View will not be one of the options available. I never made this clear as I never knew that the problem existed until recently, so I apologize for not explicity stating this in earlier threads.
