the truth about aspartame

So is there any truth to this:
why Aspartame is so dangerous:

When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to Eformaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. (Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants.) The methanol toxicity mimics among other conditions multiple sclerosis. People were being diagnosed with having multiple sclerosis in error. The multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, where methanol toxicity is!

Systemic lupus has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers. The victim usually does not know that the aspartame is the culprit. He or she continues its use, irritating the lupus to such a degree that it may become life-threatening. We have seen patients with systemic lupus become asymptomatic once taken off diet sodas. In the case of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, (when in reality, the disease is methanol toxicity), most of the symptoms disappear. We've seen many cases where vision returned and hearing improved markedly. This also applies to cases of tinnitus.

During a lecture I said "If you are using ASPARTAME (NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc.) and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting pains, numbness in your legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss-you probably have ASPARTAME DISEASE!" People were jumping up during the lecture saying, I've got some of these symptoms: Is it reversible?" Yes, Not drinking diet sodas and keeping an eye out for aspartame on food labels, yes!

The artificial sweetener aspartame is responsible for an epidemic of cancer, brain tumors, and multiple sclerosis

Umm, snopes is right, false..... but did you even read the article posted? It didn't say it CAUSED those things, just that symptoms were similar. (oh and yes, the article is BS, but keep kidding yourself if you think consuming large amounts of artificial sweetner is "ok")

I wouldnt say it doesnt, theres just no information supporting it....

"To date, FDA has not determined any consistent pattern of symptoms that can be attributed to the use of aspartame, nor is the agency aware of any recent studies that clearly show safety problems."

"Analysis of the National Cancer Institute's public data base on cancer incidence in the United States ? the SEER Program ? does not support an association between the use of aspartame and increased incidence of brain tumors. "

I'd still not put much weight in that claim that it does cause it, but theres also no supporting proof sayin git doesnt.....

That's because you can't prove that it doesn't. Just like you can't prove that blue geese with 4 eyes don't exist anywhere in the universe. Science does not prove the non-existence of something.

Why do people even use artificial sweeteners? Sugar is natural and safe.

Fat person at the drive-thru: I'll have 6 quarter-pounders with cheese, 4 large fries, and a small diet coke

Good GAWD! How can otherwise intelligent folks so blindly believe the internet FUD that is spread on just about everything?

This BS on Aspartame has been totaly crushed, yet people still believe it and spread it.

Why???

Many reasons:

1. Much better for your teeth
2. Unlike 6 quarter pounders or even candy, your body does not adjust to soft drink sugar intake. There was a recent study that showed this. If you drink 500 calories in soda, your body does not recognize this as caloric intake and still thinks it needs more.
3. Even if your body did adjust, if you would rather eat calories in different sources you might use it. For example, I use it in tea and coffee and eat something else. My overall enjoyment is higher even though my overall coffee/tee enjoyment is lower.
4. Heartburn. Some people get a lot of heartburn when using sugar as a sweetener. I only get it from sugar-laced pastries.

The increased risk of diabetes from pure sugar, to me, is far more risky than aspartame, and Splenda is even last risky. However, I still only consume 1 or 2 diet sodas a day, so even if aspartame is risky, I probably won't ever notice it. Since the FDA, which is usually pretty conservative (look at how they clamped down on ephedrine, which is safe when used as intended) hasn't found any correlation in higher doses to increased health risks, I'll continue to splenda/aspartame anything I can - sodas/jellies/popsicles/ice cream and so on.

I was under the assumption that the FDA banned wood alcohols for consumption? Isn't that why they disallowed the sale of absinthe in the U.S.???

Solution: drink water. Even without the sugar, soda is bad for you.

I would agree with this. But not that diet soda harms you phsyically... I say it gives you a sweet tooth, even if it is artifically sweetened and 0 calories. It makes you crave sweet things.

I'm a water drinker. My tap water tastes fine so I drink plenty of that.
Probably a gallon or more per day.

Ever drink soda after sports ? It just makes you sick... like your body's rejecting it but it's still thirsty for liquid. Actually, I don't really know a good time to drink soda.

Hell, I have most of those symptoms and I don't even drink soda! (well, rarely if at all)

And Amused is pretty much dead on with this issue. The aspartame scare is worse than the Olestra scare. At least there is proof that Olestra causes some issues (diahrea, bloating, stomach pain, etc.).

I drink 1+ gallon of water a day even on days I don't work out. When I do lift or swim that goes up to about 1.5 gallons or more.

I don't see a harm in drinking diet sodas, although like Amused said, they do cause you to crave other foods - however this hold for coffee/tea/any and all substances besides water. I admit this, but I don't think there's a difference. I quit drinking all sodas junior year in high school (2000-2001) and I didn't really start until this past fall. I tend to drink a diet soda now where I used to drink a coffee earlier, and I think the diet soda causes me to crave sweet foods LESS than coffee.
