Because the earth is round, and method of representing its surface on a flat drawing will always introduce some form of distortion. The main types of distortion are shape, area and length. Different methods of drawing maps have been designed to minimize different types of distortion, or to alter the balance of distortions for special purposes.

You forgot "direction". Back to geography class with you! 😛

ok seriously, I understand the point of the map. No reason to be an asshat about it.

The map was making a point that Geographical Education is poor mostly due to a dated and mishaped mapping style.
Before I made my comment I just grabbed my globe (a mini one sitting on my desk) and spun it around comparraing NA with Africa: and said, "pfft, there isnt THAT much of a difference" - my guess was maybe 15%... guess I was 10% low 😛
When I was in 5th or 6th grade I remember going over the different map styles, and why one was better than the other, etc. I was always good at memorizing maps and recreating them from scratch.
The one thing that suprised me was to learn that even the Asian and European college students made these kind of mistakes. IMO we cant blame the mapping style, because it has its uses (easy to read), we should instead blame the lack of proper Social Studies Education.

If all people originated in Africa and spread out all over the world, creating a myriad of 'advanced' civilizations how come the ones who stayed behind never 'progressed' (with the exception of Egypt in ancient times)? Seems like outside of the cities life is very much unchanged.
