The transit system in this city is PURE ASS.

First and foremost... None of the routes, save for 2 or 3, meet anywhere except AT THE FRIGGIN' HOSPITAL. I don't want to go to the hospital. I don't want to go in that direction AT ALL.
Linkage to schedules
They don't even serve EITHER of the university campuses, any of the 4 small colleges or trade schools, or any of the major employers (Harley Davidson, York International Heating & Air Conditioning, that kind of thing). They serve TWO residential areas within the city itself. Some of the outlying 'burbs have a bus that comes through a couple times a day - but after 6, you're screwed.

I see more of their Paratransit vehicles than their normal buses - which is $2.50-$3 per trip for disabled people only. Not too shabby for what essentially amounts to a REALLY BIG taxi. I actually see so many of them that I thought they were the primary service until I actually moved here.

And on the topic of the Paratransit vehicles... Those are nice. They're clean. They're biodiesel fueled. They look like they ride very nicely. They have more seats than the real buses do. The buses on the other hand... They belch HUGE plumes of black diesel exhaust, usually filled with chunky ****** (this happened even before the biodiesel transition, and to my knowledge, they're still using normal diesel in the route buses). The white lettering on the back of the bus is usually covered in a thick black dust (if it's not, it just rained a few minutes ago). The whole vehicle lurches around when stopping. That's how you can tell that they're stopping - the lights almost never work.

And finally. RABBIT. TRANSIT. Whoever named it should be SHOT. I prefer not to think about how this name really came about, and instead mentally attribute it to the Duke3d level "Rabid Transit".

It's not that bad- not as bad as Boston, anyway.

Do Boston's bus routes at least coincide?

Probably.

The best part is the roads. Instead of a grid, let's make a big wagon wheel with one road doing the circumfrence, and a bunch of roads going in- but only one going out. Sound good?

When will you realize that no one here gives a flying fvck?

I realized that a long time ago.

I don't care.

Try coming to Detroit, merely mentioning mass or public transit will have bullets flying your way. Well....not that bullets flying in Detroit is abnormal 😛

In my experience the bus routes are pretty extensive. It is the timing that is very unreliable. The schedule will say one bus every 10 min and I'll be waiting for 30 min or more. Sometimes two buses on the same route will come at the same time, one bus tailgating the other (which is retarded and completely useless, why couldn't one bus just find a place to park for 10 min and then continue?), and then there won't be another bus for a long time.

I lived in Detroit too, the people mover is a joke but being the motor capitol what did you expect?

Don't you have like 16 old A-team vans and 80's Chevy Caprices on blocks sitting in your front yard? Doesn't at least one of them drive?

Haha.

What really gets under my skin is that I moved here on the premise that it would reduce the mileage I had to drive. Not so. Add in the fact that I'm now no longer dependant, and as such have places to go to take care of living, in addition to my normal destinations, I still drive the EXACT SAME 2000-3000mi/mo. But now they're city miles, instead of highway miles.

I don't live there anymore - I have an '03 Ford Focus, and a '95 Subaru Legacy and not quite enough money to put gas in them.

I'd have to say the same for San Diego.

But are your buses painted red? And do they have big puffy white.... Tails, I think they're supposed to be painted on the back? And were they named after a Duke Nukem level? 😛

Did you really expect to replace 2000+ miles in the car with bus riding? If you want to save gas, first look into reducing the number of trips you have to make. Get hat 2500 miles down to 500 miles, then see if you can do those on the bus, or by bike. 2500 miles in a bus will just suck.

Well like I said the idea of mass transit in the metro detroit area is never going to happen since all the local people and politicians say we're the automotive capital of the world and that doesnt fit with mass transit....which is retarded to say the least.

At least you have a choice, albeit a crappy one, I have no choice, it's either drive or nothing.

Our bus is named the COW. They even painted them up white with black splotches.

I wasn't expecting to replace them all. I was expecting to be able to replace SOME of them.

I can't. The only areas that I go that are serviced, I go out of hours (the 7-6 operating schedule chaps my ass)

Why didn't you calculate that out *before* moving?

Because it seemed obvious at the time that it would work out as expected. I had other reasons, anyway. Less stress (wrong on that count, too, there's more, but for different reasons), more time for a social life (got that bit right), rampant sex (VERY right on that one), and FFS, I'm in college. I should be able to take care of myself by now.

I thought you lived in MD?

Anyway, what hospital? Memorial or York? I live a few blocks from Memorial hospital, and I see a rabbit transit bus on Mt. Rose or Hill quite frequently.

Anyway, york is not a large city. You can't expect a transit system that can get you everywhere on a timely basis. buy a decent bike--you can get from point a to point b pretty easily--nothing is TOO far away. And as for gas...we are cheaper than MD right now, and actually cheaper than most of the other areas on York County. I find the Sunoco at the corner of Belmot and East market is usually very competitive, as well as the Hess at haines and Market. I drove by the Sheetz on Queen Street just off Exit 16 this evening and I think I'm gonna have to start checking them out, too. they were $2.69 this evening.
