Which isn't hard for identity theives to get.

They shouldn't have processed that application like that PERIOD.

getting someone's SS number isn't terribly hard...

What's stopping someone from just filling out an application online? In your name and SS#....

I had a reasonably hard time convincing Citibank to activate a card I got shortly after moving, but nonetheless I've always burned credit card/bank offers.

I probably should be more careful from now on - the credit card companies are always sending me those worthless access checks for my "convenience", and I keep tearing them up & throwing them away. I really wish they would just stop sending them in the first place...

While in college I was signing up for a Citibank card in order to get a free t-shirt. I was using all fake information (address, phone, etc.) except my real name since they checked id. After the guy told me that he had to take a picture of my driver's license and that I needed to give my parents address, phone, etc, I tore up the application and put it in a trash can a block down the street. A week letter I get all these credit cards in the mail. Here the guy running the signup had followed me to the trash can and signed me up for 5 credit cards. Somehow they were able to process it with just my name. Turns out the guy gets a commission for every card he signs up.

I literally get a credit card offer everyday.. from the same company. Chase sends me the exact same offer every single day that mail is delivered. I hate Chase.

I agree, same thing here and its fvcking annoying. I especially like how they try to word the description in the letter so that I think its free money that won't show up on my next credit card statement.

they accepted an application that was ripped to many pieces, taped, filled out with another address than the one on the app, and used a cell phone number...

You know what I really hate? A couple of years ago, I had a PO Box. Every time I went in there to check the mail, Id throw away the junk. Everyone did it. One day I went to check my mail and the trashcan had everything pulled out of it and there were letters scattered all over the place. Someone was hunting the trash for offers I figure. Now that I know how easy this is, it doesnt suprise me. This sh|t pisses me off because it raises the cost of borrowing for everyone and the credit card companies just take the loss as part of doing business. :|

Mine always get burnt. Of course if you do get ripped off by one of the million & one credit card offers, purchase checks, etc. that are mailed to you unsolicited it's up to you to prove you were ripped off and attempt to clear your credit.

Send back every pre-paid envelope with random crap in it.

Same here. But when we get tons of stuff to shred, I just make a fire in the fireplace and burn it all. Don't wnat to tax my poor little shredder out too much.

But even better is the page about the guy who took the return envelopes and taped it to a box of bricks and stuff like that. He actually had the CC company talk to his Post Office to not accept them any more because he ws costing them money.

I don't do that but when I get one, I shred the actual application, then take the Terms and Conditions sheet and put that back in the reply envelopt and send it back to them.
