So, back to the smoke filled rooms where party bosses make decisions for the rest of the people?

Fern

the people can still vote however they want, and let the party bosses know what they think of their decisions, via the vote. That doesn't change.

But hey, clearly whatever the GOP is doing works, right? I mean, their slate of "candidates" for 2016 was just over-brimming with competent, consummate leaders. And then there is the entirely non-problematic issue of the GOP constantly having to explain away the Nazis and White Supremacists that have found a comfortable home within the party, let alone great support in local elections.

But yeah, it's all working fine, right?

There is a deep and malignant cancer within the GOP that the party, and its members are not willing to address. It has been taken over by white nationalists and authoritarians. It is no longer conservative.

Yes, a thousand times yes. Let the parties choose their own candidates that reflect the party's values and platform. If they win in the general, great for the party. If they lose, great for everybody else.

Why is someone like this even in the running? :\
I'm guessing you can't legally prevent someone from running for office based on their views instead of some value-neutral qualification factor like age, having a home in the district you're running in, etc.

I'm sure if the major parties had their way they'd probably limit a bunch of nuts from running under their banner because of views that were politically toxic.
It's subtle but Osiris didn't ask why Nehlen is running. The answer as you put it is because nobody can prevent him.

"In the running" in this context implies why is Nehlen even a current contender? That question was answered in other replies.

Funny Trump makes up some bullshit about Obama being born in Kenya and almost 50% of Republicans believe it. Why couldn't they mount the same kind of campaign against this white supremacist?

Republicans could do that if they were serious. Call on Trump to bad mouth this guy.

I know you know the answer and all...but the answer is because at least 50% of them are racists (the proud ones). Then there's at least another 20% or so that are the "quiet, ambivalent" racists.

So Republicans want to bitch and moan about being labeled racists but won't take active steps to root racism from their party.

Meh. Nehlen is not the top candidate to replace Ryan. He is a loser racist who ran against Ryan in 2016 because he is an attention whore. This is a nothingburger. Think progress is just jerking off its readers.

Spot on. The entire story is designed to generate an emotional response from low information readers.

We have enough information to know that this one got over 10,000 votes in a small district, and the Illinois Nazi over 20,000 in an even smaller district in PRIMARIES. That means only registered Republicans can vote. That means WAY to many Republicans support this.

We know enough to know every single avowed racist and anti-semitic organization, group and pretty much individual identifies and votes Republican.

We know enough to know overt racism, anti-semitism and bat shit nonsense has become mainstreamed in the Republican party. My thread on Bat shit becoming mainstream in the GOP more than proved that.

We know enough to know you're projecting again.

The only reason they don't "like" this guy is that they probably think he'll lose against a Democrat. If that wasn't the case, the GOP would have no issue with supporting him IMO.

Yet Nehlen got 10,864 votes in his Republican primary run against Ryan. That's more votes than any other Republican got in that race against Ryan.

You act like this is the first time. Remember the primary in Illinois?
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/20/us/politics/arthur-jones-illinois.html

What about it? Another loser racist attention whore who only won because the GOP couldn't find a legitimate GOP candidate. From your link:
Mr. Jones, 70, unsuccessfully sought the nomination five times before, and his victory on Tuesday was a foregone conclusion after the Republican Party failed to draft another candidate to enter the race against him.

Again I see no effort to root this guy from their midst. How a birther like campaign to get this guy out?

Or is that kind of effort only saved for the black guy born in Hawaii?

See the part I bolded above? That's completely wrong, as is, therefore, the rest of your nonsense.

Voters in Wisconsin can't even register as Repub or Dems, and the primaries are open.

I have wondered several times if the local dems in these shithole districts should register as Republicans and vote the nazis into the GOP primary. Maybe organize a tiki torch march through downtown to support the Republican cause. Then vote true for the general elections.
The white supremacists have coopted the GOP in enough places in the red states that this could be a viable strategy across the south.

Inching fascists closer to political office is never the correct option.

Meh. They still got over ten thousand votes in one tiny district, and over 20,000 in another. What, do you think Dems went out and voted Nazi to make the GOP look bad?

IDK. I'm not from Wisconsin etc. I can imagine some people not wanting to vote for Paul Ryan so there may have been some votes for the 'other guy', an anybody but Ryan thingy. Whether or not they knew of this guy I cannot say. I don't even know if he campaigned etc.

My expectation is that you put a name on ballot, any name (Elmer Fudd etc.), and it's going to get some votes, even if unintentional votes. Some people can't figure out how to vote if news reports are to be believed.

In any case, this guy doesn't seem to be a "Top Republican" as claimed.

He got the second most votes after Ryan. It certainly gives him more cred than any other Republican candidate for the job.
