Xbox Live's Major Nelson (aka Director of Programming Larry Hyrb) has let slip the top 20 games played from Xbox Live. He breaks things up into four categories to differentiate between games played on the Xbox 360, Xbox Live Arcade, Indie Games, Games for Windows, and the Original Xbox.

A few surprises make their way to the list but Halo and three Call of Duty titles dominate the Xbox 360 list as expected.

Battlefield 1943 took the top spot of Xbox Live Arcade games after its server melting debut in July. Surprisingly, Uno was still able to take a spot in the top 10 despite being released in 2006.

The amusing I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1 is the top game played on the Xbox 360's Indie Games service. The game itself is only a dollar so if you enjoy quick dual-stick shooter with self-referential humor that it is worth a look see.

Unique users is a fine stat for weekly charts, but I don't think it makes much sense for an annual chart. It'd be much better if they used "Unique User Months" or "Unique User Weeks" so that a person who played a game during every month would count as 12, while a user who only played the game once would count as 1. But then the problem is that a recently released game could only be played in one or two months so you'd have to adjust for that, but you can't assume that because someone played a game in November and December, that means they'd have played all 12 months... I guess it's not so easy to come up with a more useful statistic, but I just think there should be some accounting for how much people play.
