EA Maxis' Spore was by far the most pirated PC game in 2008, according to a list compiled by Torrent-tracking blog TorrentFreak. The title, surrounded by controversy over its anti-piracy DRM, was illegally downloaded over 1.7 million times.

Electronic Arts took a beating in capturing four of the top five slots, with EA Maxis' The Sims 2 taking the not-so-coveted second place by reaching over 1.1 million downloads. The EA-published Crysis and Command & Conquer 3 came in at fourth and fifth, respectively.

Ubisoft's PC port of Assassin's Creed grabbed a reluctant third place with over a million downloads. The game was leaked to torrent networks over six weeks ahead of its retail release in April. Ubisoft later sued disc replicator Optical Experts Manufacturing (OEM) for $10 million in damages, believing that an OEM employee was responsible for the leak.

The rest of the list follows:

1. Spore / 1,700,000 / Sept. 2008
2. The Sims 2 / 1,150,000 / Sept. 2004
3. Assassins Creed / 1,070,000 / Nov. 2007
4. Crysis / 940,000 / Nov. 2007
5. Command & Conquer 3 / 860,000 / Mar. 2007
6. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare / 830,000 / Nov. 2007
7. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas / 740,000 / Jun. 2005
8. Fallout 3 / 645,000 / Oct. 2008
9. Far Cry 2 / 585,000 / Oct. 2008
10. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 / 470,000 / Oct. 2008

I can think of a few reasons why some of these are so high up.
Spore - overall disappointment vs. the hype.
Assassin's Creed - interesting gameplay but boring as hell.
CoD4 - for the amazing, but very short, single-player campaign.

I don't know much about the others, but the same might apply.

Looks like the casual gamer these douchebag publishers love to cater to so much are the worst pirates.

Since the article was published by a blog that tracks torrent downloads, I'd have to guess that they probably got the numbers by tracking torrent downloads of the games... ;)

My five roommates all pirated spore (I didn't even play it...I just stared for a few minutes and found it boring). They all played it about 6 hours each...and then deleted it once the novelty wore off.

Piracy for the PC is a problem. I know too many people who download games as opposed to buy them. That is a lot of lost revenue. There is obviously no way to completely prevent it (there are forums of guys who are too cheap to buy WC3, so when they want to play dota online, they set up a hamachi network and then do LAN game...) Even if many people play it for 3 hours, think it is crap, and move along, that still leaves quite a few people who abuse it.

Don't tell pirates that, they love the "I wouldn't have bought it anyway" excuse. Or all I did was make a copy, it's not like I actually cost them anything!

I love how many EA games are up there...

In regards to Spore, I know so many people who pirated that game. It's insane. But for many, it's the type of game that you fiddle with for a bit and then never play again.

EDIT: As for the Sims, I can see that. It's widely available, and nobody who is just getting into the game wants to buy the 9000 expansions.

Plus the fact it's a year old, the next one in the series is out, and it's STILL 49.99 RETAIL AND STEAM.

Personal samples aren't representative of the whole...

For example, all of my gamer friends have pirated at least one PC game and 0 of them have modded or pirated any console game. Based of this sample, I would say that console pirating is non-existant, and PC pirating rampant (100% of the sample).

Still, I think PC pirating is much more prevalent than any console pirating, with the exception of handhelds. Pirating on a computer is just so much simpler, easier, and cheaper than modding and pirating any of the big three consoles.

I actually know several people who pirated Spore just to spite EA for their draconian DRM bs. I'd say a lot of the gamer community feels the same way.

Some of them are probably close to or over the number of copies they even sold. :( And downloading it just to spite them? That is absolutely retarded. A lot of people complain about the games that are no longer PC exclusives, and so in the port, unless it is very well done, we often see console-ish parts to it. I don't exactly like that myself but I'd rather get the game on the PC than not at all, usually the ports are fine.

I'm worried developers and publishers are simply going to go from PC exclusive, to not exclusive, to console only. They really can't win. There is always a lot of whining about DRM and such and lots of piracy. Funny when you see people post about games they pirated, say they can't afford the game, then below you see their computer is a top of the line one with SLI, etc.

At times, you hear about people moving to the consoles because it is easier, cheaper, etc. I've looked at it, but all this time I still see no need to get a 360 when my PC plays just about everything it has and more, better. I hope it stays that way.

Its a real shame to see Fallout 3 on that list.
The quality and amount of gameplay in that title should justify a legal purchase to any gamer to help keep our hobby alive on the pc.

And Seeing Crysis and Far Cry 2 on the lists surprise me only because they were/are bundled with so many of the newest 3d cards that i would assume a lot of people got a "free" copy anyway.

I do notice that Bioshock and Mass Effect arent on the list.
Which does show the DRM on those titles must have worked.

IMO the more draconian DRM measures big publishers take, the more piracy will increase. Seems pretty clear with Spore topping the list. Give the gamer greater incentive to buy games, not more roadblocks, and they may see that change. As has been shown countless times, DRM does nothing to stop piracy. It's meant to prevent second hand sales as well is suck more money out of the customers who do buy games and aren't knowledgeable enough to understand DRM. I am shocked, truly shocked.
Since when did people who play "The Sims" even know what a torrent is.

Well, it's not like you can't find a perfectly good pirated version of both, and isn't Bioshock over a year old?

Downloading pirated games scares the bejesus outta me for some reason, as with programs. I thought about trying Fallout 3, but read too many stories of spyware and shit that came withe arrrrgh version, so I waited and rented the PS3 version from BB.

From that list, I have GTA:SA on both PS2 and PC, legal retail versions. Surprised people are still playing that game. I thought GTA:VC is a better game. GTA:SA was way too big, I lost interest after half of the San Fiero missions.

Yeah but neither were cracked until two weeks or more after release, which supposedly drives up sales since the first few weeks are when the game is "in demand" the most.
Not sure when Bioshock was released.

I dont follow sales charts at all, but i believe the last one i saw posted showed Bioshock and Mass effect (pc ver) outselling Assains Creed (pc ver) pretty easily.
(it was a console vs pc sales chart of cross platform sales)

Anyway, im not here to defend or condemn DRM on any of these titles.

Im just like most and hope that sooner or later a good compromise is reached.

All i really know is...
This crap of Owning a Game that you can only install 3 times obviously isnt working, but seems to be the most popular DRM lately.
And No DRM at all obviously isnt working either.

The only problem with these numbers is that I'd bet at least 70% of the piracy comes from people who wouldn't buy the game. With Spore, it was not worth the money they charged. As far as other games, I can't really say too much about pirating them. I've only played half of them and didn't pirate those.

Spore never interested me , so i cant say whether it deserves that top spot or now.

All i can say is, it looked so boring i wouldnt even pirate it if i could. LOL
