The Thunderbird: Slot-A versus Socket A, whats the deal?

I was looking around for a new CPU and I thought that perhaps a 1GHz Thunderbird might be nice. So I start shopping around and I see that a 1ghz thunderbird socket-A costs about $260, while a 1ghz thunderbird slot-A costs about $450. Whats the deal? What's in the slot-A chip that's so much better than a socket-A? Is a slot-A worth the price?

any information would be welcome, thanks.
