Only 14 more hours till I can blow my nose again... never thought id really want to do it that bad.

So yesterday i had nasal surgery. I had a deviated septum sicne birth, and my nose was 85% blocked. (While i was under twi-light.) The doctor chiseled out both sides of my nose and it is now tightly packed with cotton. I can only breath through my mouth, it is so dry i have to sip water or chew ice every 10 minutes or less.

Last night was no picnic...
Heavy bleeding.
Dry mouth (too dry to even eat apple pieces).
Vomiting (threw up the few apple pieces i managed to swallow).
Teeth Hurt.
had to sleep(try) sitting up on the couch. No sleep last night for me.

Today im feeling better. I was able to eat some spaghetti O's, they arent too dry to swallow. no throwing up. Got to take a shower today.
Today, the cotton packing is irritating my nose, and causing me to sneeze like crazy... and that really burns. Still having nose bleeds and sneezing makes them worse...

i still have to sleep sitting up tonight, but i get the cotton packing removed @ 8:30 am tomorrow morning. And I'll finally for the first time ever be able to breath through my nose.

NO PICS... you wouldnt want to see them anyways.

I'm not sure what a deviated septum is, but since 85% of your nose was blocked, you always breathed through your mouth?

Jesus, I have to get that surgery this summer sometime. I have been putting it off for the longest time. Judging by your post, it sounds even worse than I had thought.

I think I have a deviated septum, too. My left nostril is noticeably (to me) larger and clearer than my right nostril. It doesn't seem to be causing any problems, though. Let's hope it stays that way.

I wonder if I have that if I can only breathe through one nostril with no pattern to which one I can breathe through - sometimes left, sometimes right.

i found out the if i sleeps on my right side, my right nostril will block itself, on left side, the left. so test it out.

I have the same problem as a result of a football incident but my insurance won't cover it since they consider it cosmetic.....cosmetic?

The surgery was pain free. Actually im still pretty painless with my oxi-codeins.
Its mostly like having a miserable 48hour case of sinus/flu.

total sinus/nasal blockage for 48 hours.
possible vomiting from swallowing blood(runs down your throat)
nose bleeds
sneezing
dry mouth & possible tooth ache, trouble chewing/swallowing.
Ear pressure/popping

I have concern about the packing removal tomorrow. Because of all the dried blood in my nose, I think that may be slightly painful.

As for pictures, theres not much to see, I look like i have a broken nose... its wrapped in guaze and tape.

Girlfriend had that same procedure performed when she was younger. They ended up ruining enough of the blood vessels that her nose is always cold to the touch. Even in summer. It's quite weird actually.

The insurance should at least pay for half...
the internal part is Septoplasty, your insurance should cover this part as it is usually medically necessary to treat breathing disorders...
the cosmetic part of the surgey is rhinoplasty... external repairing of the noses shape. usually this part isnt covered by insurance...

UPDATE:
Had cotton packing removed this morning. THAT HURT LIKE A MUTHA FVCKER...
Just imagine waxing the inside of your nose to pull out all the hair, and youll understand the pain I just felt.

Still wearing a guaze pad to catch any remaining bleeding, from the packing removal. Can breather through my nose pretty ok, a little dry and crusty from the blood.
Must use saline spray as needed. Steam treatement 2x daily... either by hot shower or by using the old bowl & towel method.

One more checkup to go in 10 days.

I had that a few years ago. Instead of cotton though, they shoved these spreader things up there, all the way up into my SINUSES. kept them in there with a stitch. I almost puked when they came out, Each was like 3 inches long! Then they pulled the blood clots out with tweezers, and I almost puked again. It was fun stuff

I still can't breathe outta my nose properly!

I have those also I think.
Theres still some plastic splint in my sinuses that has to come out in another 7-10 days. After feeling the cotton come out, I do not feel very optomistic about the pain level of the splints coming out.

it'll all be worth it when you find out how many friends youve lost because you've been breathing through your mouth your entire life... many more opportunities will open up :D
