Theres something about grainy balck & white classic 1950s science fiction that cannot be replicated or surpassed by all the high-tech special effects in the world.

IMHO the original 1951 release will always be the best.

Love the original. The remake (edit: prequel) probably won't even compare, but I may see it anyway if it doesn't totally suck. Won't be the same without Kurt Russell though. :(

The one with Kurt Russell was a remake. The original was filmed back in the 50s.

This one is set three days before the events of John Carpenter's movie. I saw the 1982 movie just three days ago - pretty good movie, has held up real well. And yes, this is about the Norwegian team (and if I'm not mistaken, three Americans who are part of their expedition) so it's supposed to have a lot of subtitled dialogue.

I'm guessing everyone in this movie will be dead before the credits roll (they have to be, right?) so not sure how that will help add to tension.

I have not seen the 1982 film since I was a kid...I might have to pick that one up soon!

As for the trailer...I thought it looked pretty wicked!

Yeah, MacReady and Childs were alive at the end, though MacReady points out that Childs could be the Thing at that point. It's pretty strongly implied they will die, too. That said, if this prequel's a hit...maybe there will be a sequel where Childs was, in fact, the Thing, and that MacReady and Childs get rescued, so the Thing escapes Antarctica!

I am a big fan of the 1982 version. One of the only movies to actually creep me out as a kid. I was really looking forward to this "prequel"..unfortunately just looking at the trailer tells me 2 things.

1. SUCKFEST
2. SUCKFEST

Whats with the straight out of college looking people in these new horror films? This isn't a scream queen horror movie. Oh, and CGI. This is what is killing hollywood.

Shrug, as I said I think it looks badass and I will see it opening day. These are the same dudes who remade Dawn of the Dead (the zombie movie in the mall) and they did a very good job with that so I have no doubt they'll do it again!

I thought two guys were left: Kurt & the black dude. The movie never really said if they died or not.

How can you not know Keith David, he is a great actor, having done the Thing, Something about Mary, and even Disney's The Princess Frog.

Considering the Carpenter movie is one of the greatest horror movie of all time, it has a lot to live up to.

The Thing 1982 is great but for best Horror Movie I would give Halloween 1978 the top spot.

I completely agree, I'll be quite upset if the new one is all CGI. :(

I partially agree.
I will be quite upset if it has cheap cgi without any fantasy or realism. Most CGI is to perfect in vision but lacks being alive. It looks to scripted by some "awesome" dudes who throw in to much effects which make it obvious. However, the vampire from blade II was pretty well done for CGI.

With modern techniques it can be made more life like. The problem is that CGI looks to smooth and animatronics look fake but move more in a scary realistic and at the same time unrealistic manner. That seem to be because the way of movement is off, but the texture is more life like, dried up blood or just more filaments and fleshy.

I will also be upset if it does not have the great same style of movie music the 1982 version had. Movies with beat music or rock music are such failures just because of the music (With exceptions of course, i loved the music from Constantine). It is the same as watching a horror movie without sound. The effect is gone in a lot of ok movies when they mess up the ambience with the wrong kind of music in movies.
An exception of actually good sound effects is the dark hellish sounding solo guitar parts in the ghost rider movie.

Yeah, MacReady and Childs were alive at the end, though MacReady points out that Childs could be the Thing at that point. It's pretty strongly implied they will die, too. Perhaps they use it in alternate universe version. Imagine the xmen or the avengers having to fight a mob of thing creatures that have absorbed multiple super villains and unfortunate super heroes.

PS. You should really see REC and REC2. It is fun.

The 1951 and 1982 versions are both great. One of the few times you can say that about a movie and it's remake.

I watched the 2011 "prequel" tonight. It was a fun movie to watch.
The CGI was obvious but good enough to watch. The monsters were more realistic in comparison to the hulk from the second hulk movie. The actor who plays the adversary of the incredible hulk, Emil Blonsky also plays a part in this movie.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a feast for the eyes.
