actually, it was better than saving private ryan. however, it was poorly edited: too long. but saving private ryan was nothing more than a more-graphic john wayne propaganda flick. in the end, it glorified and romantisized the military and war. the thin red line did a much better job of entertaining without being an adverstisment for the military. if you want a really good war flick, check out full metal jacket.

ok i enjoy full metal jacket as much as the next guy, but to say its a great war flick is just wrong.

What I think are quality war movies-
Saving Private Ryan
The Deer Hunter
Bridge Over River Kwai
Das Boot
Glory
Patton
The Sand Pebbles
Platoon

blackhawk down was good too, only saw it once though

Don't forget Delta Force, with the legendary Chuck Norris!

Haha thats funny.. dont forget Delta Force 2!

I've seen all the great war movies minus Apoc Now, and my favorite is probably The Thin Red Line. That movie made me feel sick in my soul, like it was dying along with the others in the movie. Not many movies have been able to touch me like that.

I watched The Thin Red Line at the theatres. One friend fell asleep, and me and my other friend were grueling in pain... we don't really walk out of movies. I had a huge headache after watching it.... its ranks up there as one of the worst for me.

Any "War Movie" that include slow motion scenes of women wistfully looking out of a window and men swimming is NOT a real war movie.

REAL War movies:

Das Boot
Patton
Cross of Iron
Stalingrad
The Lost Battalion
Apocalypse Now
All Quiet on the Western Front
Gallipoli
Platoon
Tora Tora Tora
Zulu
Full Metal Jacket

Well, if you insist on arguing that it isn't a war movie, instead of discussing it based on its own merits, well then you're just trying too hard to characterize. A movie doesn't have to fit into a mold. So it wasn't nonstop action, who cares? It is what it is. I for one liked it alot, mostly because of the score: superbly written for this film. It also has a very quiet, haunting feel to it, which I liked. I guess some people need non-stop action to keep from falling asleep. I'd rather get into the characters.

without reading all the other stuff....out of pure laziness, mind you, ill say i enjoyed saving private ryan

and i did not enjoy the thin red line. i was told it was great, saw it, the box listed awards and such....but damn

well, it was slow. damned slow. i dont remember much (blocked it from memory) but i know it took a damned long time for anything interesting (read: violent) to happen. yes, i watch war movies for the war, sorry, probably some stupid guy thing

anyway, the thin red line was damn long, and the first half was damn boring....pearl harbor sucked all the way tho, both are a waste of time and money

oh, and if you havent seen it yet, skip WindTalkers. i thought it might be ok, but it was bad. really bad

tho, it was cool when christian slater lost his head to a katana, always good to see that, otherwise it was a big disappointment, nic cage fought like rambo and the indian guy was annoying

Saving Private Ryan was fun, but that is about it. I can honestly say I didn't do very much thinking during it. It was just one long action sequence. At first I thought TTRL was extremely boring, but I began to fall in love with it. I can't sum up how I feel about the movie in words, but if you listen to the songs those natives were singing it does a pretty good job of it.

thin red line sucked my ass.
I can see how some may like it, but personally it was slow and poorly put together.
Yes, there were tons of great subtleties and metaphors; lots of it reminded me of Apocalypse Now. However, that didn't change the fact that it's DULL. Great movie for film school kids and war movie freaks, not me.

Thin Red Line was long, but it was good. More character development and more of a story compared to that crap movie Saving Private Ryan.

I say it's the worst movie ever period. It's the only time i have ever walked out of the theater before the movie was over.

I have to agree with fatbaby that TTRL wasn't so much a war movie... it was a movie that had war in it. Saving Private Ryan was simple and dumbed down for mainstream... doesn't make it a bad movie... but I do still prefer TTRL. I don't mind slow pace if there's a reason behind it... and there most certainly was.

and obviously you havnt seen windtalkers.. POS
Lemme say it again... John Woo is a HACK... mebbe that should be added to my sig. :p
