The ten dollar splinter

So a FRIEND of mine(cough cough nudge nudge wink wink) was at Target recently and as he picked up a TV stand tray thingy with wooden legs, made in Vietnam ... he got about a one inch splinter in his left palm.

He was going to shrug it off, but realized it was quite deep, and very painful. So "he" goes to customer service to see if they have a first aid kit with a tweezers. They do, and he removes it, uses their hand sanitizer, and takes a band-aid.

He repeats that it's no big deal a few times, but does mention he wouldn't say no to a gift card or something. They give him a $10 card he uses in the same visit.

Was this a reasonable thing to do or was he being a little, whiny, sniveling bitch? What, if anything should he have done differently?

Btw I fully know I'll regret posting this and have effectively extended an engraved invitation to be insulted. Just honestly curious what others would've done.

First he should sue the store, then sue the manufacturer and if all else fails, he should sue you.

I'd start a class action suit with all other people who got splinters at Target and claim millions in mental anguish.

But the lawyers would have gotten the millions...everyone who got a splinter would have gotten a coupon, good for a discount on Pledge.

That was good of Target to do the $10 giftcard. Probably most places would have shrugged it off.

I wouldn't have asked for anything. That's exploiting their fear for personal gain. $10 isn't outrageous though, so I don't have a huge problem with it.

I read the thread title as "The ten dollar sphincter" ...

Also, not sure if it's been said, but you should sue them.

If you needed tweezers, it couldn't have been too big of a splinter. There was a lot of blood on the floor at HD next to their metal roofing. I was being careful, but damn, that stuff can cut easily. I never mentioned it to them, and until I got bored checking, used to walk down that aisle each time I was there to see if my blood was still on the floor. (afaik, 8 years later, it's still there.)

I think I probably pretty effectively assuaged their fear with repeatedly saying "It's really not a big deal" when they expressed concern, etc.

Er, I mean... I think MY FRIEND did, yea. That's the ticket.

I mentioned that I "wouldn't say no to a gift card or something" because it didn't seem unreasonable to me to get a minor discount off my shopping that day after sustaining an (admittedly minor) injury while merely picking up a product of theirs to examine it.

In the past I wouldn't have said anything, and had it been a smaller splinter or had I the means to remove it myself before getting home (I did try, but my fingers weren't up to the challenge, it was tweezer work) I wouldn't have even alerted them to it happening.

This means war! Coming to a theater near you....
Vietnam II.
This time, it's personal.

As long as his hand doesn't fall off next week, I'm fine with the gift card. It's a goodwill offering. We're sorry it happened. It's not the customer experience we expect to give.
Your 'friend' didn't spaz out and threaten a lawsuit. He just floated the idea.

Missed chance. He could have been a millionaire. I would have walked out, found some dog poo and rubbed it in my hand to get it nice and infecty.

In all likelihood, they would've offered on their own to "my friend" but I've learned that customer satisfaction sometimes doesn't rank as highly as it once did, I've had some bad experiences with it the last few years. Especially moving to the east coast from the midwest, I've learned that attitudes are different and learned that I need to be a bit more assertive here. Perhaps that's being a whiny bitch, but I went out of my way to be extra nice about the whole thing, and really downplayed it. I was only at their counter borrowing their tweezers for about a minute.

So, perhaps I should have just left and taken it out when I got home... but I had other errands to run and it actually hurt quite a lot. It was easily the longest splinter I've ever had.

"but does mention he wouldn't say no to a gift card or something."

That's asking for a handout. 49%er!

The OP and others like him have swelled the ranks over the 9 months since that comment was made.

Hey now, never in my life have I used welfare or unemployment or any other sort of government hand out unless you count while I was serving in the US Navy and of course I received health care during that time, but I was working for it.
