The teardown Artists (Wired.com)

That is quite fascinating. Didn't know they did that.

Somehow, I don't think Toyota does the same thing with GM vehicles.

sure do. thats how Toyota started. the went to GM plants, took pictures. immitated, and improved. same thing with current vehicles.

they should just focus on improving their QA, use more expensive, higher quality parts, and fire all of the current designers (esp who design the mid-size and SUV's)

how do you know the GM parts arent the same quality as Toyota? what if they are better??

and why fire random designers?

because of reliability records in the past 10 years or so... do you really think the cavalier's build quality/reliability comes even close to that of a corolla... or even a protege? GM is getting better, but they need to do better than the japanese to regain the market.

as for designers... i don't see any exciting cars from chevy save the corvette. most of them are either bland or downright ugly (avalanche, SSR, HHR). the only division that looks pretty good is cadillac, but i think they need more advertising.

i dont feel like turning this into a flame fest but ill mention some cars.

Impala (bland, but it sells)
HHR (you dislike, but its selling like a mofo)
Tahoe/Escalade/Yukon
Lucerne
Caddy
Aura (when it comes out)
Solstice
Sky (when it comes out)
G6 (selling well)
Vue

im sure i missed a few.

i don't care if they sell 5 million a day, the impala, HHR, SUV's, vue are still bland. the G6 is NOT selling well, , the lucerne is a buick (an exciting buick is like a cheap ferrari), the aura, solstice, and sky looks good, but like i said, cadillac needs more publicity. they got exciting a while back when they put one in the matrix... but then nothing happened after that.

again, please don't get all defensive because i said GM's offerings are mostly unappealing, but the japanese can sell more even if their offerings are also boring (corolla, camry etc), without the price cuts, rebates, and "employee pricing"
