The tale of my stolen credit card number

So, I get a call a couple of days ago from Citi bank saying there is some unusual activity on my CC. My Citi bank Visa probably gets used less than any other card I use regularly so when someone charged $100 to T-Mobile in Oregon, $100 to MetroPCS in Texas, $500 of AMEX giftcards, and a pizza for someone here in Taylor, Michigan over the last couple of days they thought to give me a call. They closed out the account and I have new cards on the way.

I thought this was the end of it, but my son calls me up just now and says that $500 worth of AMEX gift cards just came in the mail to the house he rents from me. He says they're in his name and they show his cell phone number.

He sometimes uses a credit card of mine to pay a bill then will give me the cash and he usually does this through a web connection over the phone. The only thing I can think of is that someone cracked into a sim card he might have left in a phone when he had to do an warranty exchange. He says he is in possession of all his old broken cell phones that weren't under warranty.

What's your guess?

He got drunk and used your card to buy a bunch of random stuff. Bought a pizza in michigan to cover his tracks. Doesn't remember ordering the cards so comes clean.

I guess you should move somewhere better than Taylor MI ;)

I wonder if someone ordered the gift cards and then tried to change the delivery address after ordering them but was unable to do so

Sounds like you might have problem with the bank once they discover this info.

Well, it has to have something to do with my son, but I doubt he went to Texas and Oregon to cover it up.

I'm now thinking about maybe a virus on his phone???

Possibly. But you're going have a problem with the bank believing your side of the story. They will likely treat your son as the criminal even though he's innocent.

That would be a stretch. I already called them and told them about it they said to destroy them.

I once received $50 worth of car cleaning products at work, out of the blue. I called the company to see what was going on, and they told me someone must have used my card to purchase the products, but they only ship to the card's billing address.

They canceled the order and told me to keep the cleaning products. :)

I then called the CC Company and found that whoever stole the number had expensive tastes in computer parts as well. Unfortunately these didn't get shipped to me. lol

The CC Company took care of the rest.

Edit:

Can you find out if the pizza was delivered? If so... where? Might get a lead on your culprit. :)
