The symptoms of a crappy psu

I am wondering, my friends comp is having problems with is comp and I have been going though all his parts to see what it wrong and I have gotten to the psu. If it was a pos would it cause a system to hardlock or just restart? His comp is haveing problems the most when the comp is working away with the cdrom and hard drive active at the same time. Since I havent bought a crappy psu I am not sure what what would happen if you have one

What's the PSU brand, model and make?

Possibly, if it has poor rail voltage regulations or dip out of tolerenace when your system is severely taxed.

I dont know the make of it other than it seems to glorify the fact it is 300 watts because it has 5 stickers on it. I know It has one floppy connector 4 molex connectors and the mainboard connector. To me seeing lack of alot of plugs makes me think they cut alot of corner to make it for the least amount of money, I cant only guess whats cheap parts are on the inside. I am alost guessing that smoke from cigeretts doesnt help either.

Symptoms make the PS a likely candidate. It's difficult to dynamically measure rail voltage drops due to motor current surges of HD heads and CDROM spin-up without exotic tools.

Are the normal rail voltages OK - or marginal? If static rail voltages are marginal, then the PS is very likely the culprit.

The Leadman PowMax is a quality 500W PS for about $55 shipped. I have one and recommend it as the least expensive replacement solution. 500W, good rail voltages, cheap, quiet, 3-pin connector for monitoring PS fan speed, and an auxiliary 120VAC monitor output connector.

After searching for the model number of the psu it is a Linkworld psu. I think it is crap does anyone else know if they are
