The stuff we feed ourselves.

For lunch today i had an arby's sandwich to quench my hunger which had seemed to be growing ever since i woke up this morning. As i gratefully opened up the package to consume this modern marvel of fast food, a sliver of roast beef fell to the floor. Upon hearing the event, my cats immediately ran to the slice of meat and attempted to devour it. The first thought that coursed through my mind, which immediately turned into speach was, "no kitty, you'll get sick if you eat that." Almost as soon as I uttered the last word, i stopped and realized something totally asinine. Cats are carnivores, meat should do absolutely no harm to them. Yet, instinctively i thought for one reason or another arby's meat would indeed make them sick... so this got me to thinking and more or less realizing...Arby's meat is crap. Why do we feed ourselves these chemical wonders of fast food? Why is it not good enough for my cat and yet i willfully and gladly consume this item without second thought? Guess this would just be another wakeup call. Needless to say... i'll be putting in more thought to what i consume from now on.

However, score one for rainbow colored meat today.

BTW anyone ever read fastfood nation or The Jungle?

Ah, a subject near and dear to my heart.

In the quest to make bigger, better, *more* food, science and government are making all kinds of nice little 'experiments'. While I think it is a good thing to feed the world, there must be better ways than drugs, pesticides, and hormones. Just because the FDA says something is safe for human consumption does not mean it really is. It just means that they *think* it is, for now. :p Frankly, I don't care to be a guinea pig in longitudinal studies.

Try this: Have you ever tasted organic milk... milk without hormones or antibiotics? Take a sip of that and then take a sip of 'regular' milk. I can tell the difference... it's subtle, but organic milk is sweeter and regular milk is bitter in comparison.

When you eat processed foods, are you aware of half of what you are ingesting? There are no Twinkies or other packaged junk foods in my house. Sure, they are 'preserved for freshness' but nothing beats something fresh and homemade.

There are ways to eat and live healthier, but you have to want to make the changes. In a fast-food world, it isn't easy... but it is worth it, IMHO.

Isla, I have a solution to this. Its called Girlfriend 3.0 but she's currently out of commision back at home seeing her parental units. Therefore i have stooped to consuming food of such low quality. I do however miss the fresh foods, perhaps enough to prepare them myself from now on. Till then, however, any processed and packaged home made food from Isla-ville would be gladly appreciated. ;)
