The Strokes - who likes them?

When I listened to the Strokes new album, I was left wondering "Is This It?". Their relative success in Europe seems "Hard to Explain". I'm a huge fan of the Strokes' genre of music - what I term generically as Jangly Guitar Stuff - but given the choice between "Take It or Leave It", I think I will leave it. I don't understand why so many people I know seemed determined for me to listen to them...

In general, I hate classic rock, however my wife really likes them. I bought her the Strokes CD a while back and she really likes it. I wanted nothing to do with it, as I figured I'd hate the music as I do all other classic rock, which this basically sounds like/emulates. To my surprise I liked it. Its not something I could play over and over as the music lacks some meaningful depth to it, but it has a lot of catchy songs and good rhythm. I guess to put it simply, its very accessible and easy to listen to.

I love the strokes. The simple, catchy bass lines, the ever present, light, classic distorted sound, the classic tone all hooks me. The singer isn't bad at all, that's one thing i'm most critical of when i listen to bands. Simple, easy guitar riffs, not overdistorted, lately a clean guitar sound is hard to find in good rock bands.

I'd never heard any hype, i just heard a couple songs and ran out and bought to cd, I don't think there's a song i'm not happy with, maybe take it or leave it if i had to choose one.

I bought their CD and listen to it all the time in the car. I think they have a great sound, compared to a much of the homogenous stuff on the radio. It's lo-fi and kind of retro, and isn't all 7-string in-your-face Mesa Boogie like I keep hearing from the new bands. I hate to say it but this is pretty much what American rock has become in the last 5 years. That's probably why they are so big in Europe.

Not to thread crap, but they are the most overrated group of severely poor musicians ever assembled.

Over-rated -- O.K.
Poor Musicians -- I don't think so.
I think most everything you hear on Alt. radio is poor. The same chords we've heard a million times, different words. A band that is doing something original, doing their own thing is priceless these days.
