It was October, 2004. Fry's was having another motherboard/CPU combo for $59.99, this time some kind of Sempron with an ECS K7VTA3. Took it home along with a stick of 256, put it together with my spare hard drives, installed XP on it, and then banished it to the server closet (actually a furnace closet, but we don't use our furnace - and yes, the gas is turned off).
The only other times that it was allowed to see the light of day: a couple of hard drive upgrades, and a Rosewill PSU failure (busted caps).
Fast forward to 2008. It's been running for 4 years, 24/7, serving our mp3s, PDFs, xvids, and other files. It provides extra backup for our desktops. When I'm away from home, it gives me access to files I need in a pinch. And all the while, it processes data for SETI@HOME.
I love my home server.
