so yesterday, sprint announced that the touch pro will be available in "select retail places" on october 26th, and everywhere else (sprint retail stores, sprint.com, telesales, etc) on november 2nd. i thought, great no problem.

so on ppcgeeks.com, there were quite a few people calling their local best buys to see if they were selling the touch pro early, and some locations were. i quickly called a few nearby best buys and most of them said "we have them in stock but we cant sell it to you until sunday" or "we have a shipment and its on the way". FINALLY, one freaking store had them in stock and was selling it, so i rushed over there to get it. to my surprise, i met 2 people from ppcgeeks buying the phone as well.

then best buy ran into a problem. since i have sprint SERO (for those of you who dont know, its a employee referral plan), best buy apparently couldnt access my account from their computers, which made sense but at the same time it didnt because the guy who was activating his touch pro also had sero and best buy accessed it with no issue. 20 minutes later, a quick phone call to sprint and some notes in my account, i was able to get the touch pro (FINALLY!)!! i was eligible for the 2 year upgrade price, so from $579, it went down to $299. also, best buy reward zone was running a 20% off any phone promotion, so i was able to get that too, effectively making the phone around $250 after everything.

and this phone is SO much better than the diamond...yet it slimmer in every dimension compared to my old treo 700p.

bottom line: awesome phone, awesome plan extended for 2 years, at an awesome price.

Its good to hear that they are still extending sero plans. I was under the impression when I got mine the SERO 500 did not get phone discounts after the initial. I am dying for a new phone but I just finished my first year in August and my Q is really starting to show its age. I have been seriously considering jumping ship(Verizon) when the prorated ETF's come on board but I may just pick up a diamond off of ebay and call it a day. If it just had an SD slot I would probably have already done it.

I don't know how it works for your carrier (are you on Sprint?) but you might be up for an "Equipment Upgrade" even though you are still in contract. For me, on ATT, I think it is like 14 months after you get a phone you are eligible for an "Upgrade" which means you can get the subsidized price without signing a new contract. Although if it is a really new/fancy phone (like the iPhone), you do have to renew your 2 year agreement.

i completely agree with you about the sd card slot. how about considering a touch pro as well as the diamond?

Touch Pro will be to much. I will give them(yep sprint) a call and see if I can get a discount on the Diamond but if not ~$300 on ebay isn't bad. The Pro will likely be closer to $500. The keyboard isn't a big deal, it is mainly the expansion slot I am after.

whoa really? you can get the diamond for $250 on ebay if you use the live cashback thing, or closer to $300 for the touch pro..

The pro is currently going for 600+ though that is to be expected as it is brand new. In a couple weeks it should settle down to the $400 range. Heck the Instict and all of its problems are still going for $250.

I'm holding out for a Touch Pro HD with WM7. :) That's not a slight against the current Touch Pro, which is pretty freaking awesome, just an examination of my own phone needs.

No, no. I don't have a problem with upgrading phones when I feel the need. I just don't think the Touch Pro offers enough over my HTC Apache / PPC-6700 running WM-6.1 to justify it. An 840x480 screen with the supposedly much-improved WM7 version of IE, though, would be PLENTY of justification.

Touch HD isn't coming to the states. There is another, very similar model floating around that may come this way but I wouldn't expect it before the summer at the earliest. That is why I am looking now. I would prefer a larger screen as I loved the Ipod touch I had. So for now my plan is a second hand diamond or pro, and then the Touch HD equivalent will hopefully be out by August when I come up for renewal.

this phone just rocks...but there is one annoying problem with it. everynight when i charge it, the phone will usually be either frozen, or just wont turn on, so i have to manually take out the battery and restart the phone. otherwise the phone is great!
