The state of my system address

Not to long ago I decided I wanted to try a dual processor rig. But money was tight, so I figured I would start with one CPU then add another later. So I bought an MSI K8T Master2 FAR an Opteron 246 and 512MB of ram. This is what I am currently using. But I am now doubting my need for dual processors, while I am sure they would be sweet, they cost a lot and may not be worth it for me.

SO I figure I have a few options.

1. Keep the system the way it is, and keep my dual processor dreams alive, but again, there is the cost issue. Maybe one day I will be able to afford the other CPU and stick of ram, but who knows.

2. Keep the Opteron and ram, but get a single processor opteron board, not a bad idea, but the single CPU opteron boards are few and far between, and not that great feature wise, although I have heard there will be nForce 4 socket 940 boards.

3. Sell off the CPU ram and motherboard and get something else, what else is the question. Likely an AMD64, but not sure if I should choose socket 754 or 939, or even wait for PCI express boards. This sounds like a good idea, since I can use the extra money to put toward a new video card, likely an nVidia 6600 of some sort.

4. What other ideas do you have?

I got good deals on the parts, so if I sell them I could probablly make a good profit, but even if I keep them, its not like I am out a ton of money.

I agree. I think number three. Maybe wait for pci express too. If you have the money I would go 939 rather than 754.

Um, that was a bit confusing, which are you suggesting? So now that we have cheaper 939 CPU's, is that the socket to go with? I know a lot of people say to get it anyways, because AMD will support it longer, but most likely my next CPU purchase will also include a new motherboard purchase, so I doubt it will matter. But if the prices are getting a lot closer, then I guess there is no reason not too.

I think that's what he meant.

I'd say go with 3. too. If you want a board now do what epsilon9090 said and get s754 with cheap mobo. But if you can wait, then wait for PCIe and nforce4 chipset.

You are half way there on a DUALLY rig, keep the dream ALIVE!!!! Sure it isn't like you NEED a dually, it is more you want a dually, it's every Anandtecher?s dream, why give up now. I?m assuming you don?t do heavy gaming or anything, or you would have went with a single chip to begin with, so I figure you as a hardcore enthusiast. If that is true you have to keep the dual set up. A retail 246 is $474.00 right now at newegg. 512MB pc-3200 ECC RAM is a little over 100 bucks, if you are an enthusiast I would sink my money in to these two items instead of starting over. If you ae a gamer I would get a DFI Lanparty and a 3400 Clawhammer, if you are just wanting something to surf the net and chat online with then go with a 99 dollar Soltek NF3 250Gb board/1GB Value RAM/3200 a64 (about 460 altogather), and if you are a penny pincher go with a NF7-s ver2.0/2400 Mobile XP/GB of Value RAM (about 325 altogather).

kd2777, the reason i wanted to go dual was because I am a heavy multitasker, and will soon be doing a bit of encoding. SO like I said, its nto a need, just a want. But like you said its a nice want, but I likely wouldn't be able to afford the rest for at the very least 6 months. I am a moderate gamer, nothign to heavy and I don't need the absolute best stuff out there, but I do plan to start gaming more when I can get a new video card. My 8500DV is holding me back.

I was considering the DFI scoket 754 board, but will have a wait a bit for it to be in stock and not sell out in 10 minutes. But with the cheaper socket 939 chips, it seems like there is no reason not to go with socket 939 now. But then we got a couple of PCIe chipsets right around the corner. Not sure if this is really worth waiting for or not, what is everyones opinion on this? Assuming I next upgrade my video card in 2+ years, would we still be able to find a decent selection of AGP cards then, or will PCIe have taken hold? As of right now I am thinking the 6600GT will be my next video card(my first nVidia card BTW)unless I find some reason to get somethign else.

I already have a Tbred 2100+ and ECS K7S5A and 512MB crcuail PC2100 that came out of my rig when the opteron went in. I plan to use that and some other parts to get another rig up and running, so I can start a network. With the possiblility of a motherboard upgrade for that to, as the ECS is getting old and is kinda low end anyway. Needing the extra money for the few other parts I need is also one of the main reasons I am thinking of selling off the opteron parts.
