The state of 64bit windows these days?

I'm thinking about upgrading my machine a bit and considering 4gb of ram since ram is so dirt cheap these days. I've done my research and you pretty much have to have a 64bit operating system to handle 4gb of ram properly. I used windows xp 64bit back when it first came out well over a year ago (I think) and it was pretty bad, mostly because of driver support I suspect. So I'm wondering what the state of Vista 64bit or even xp 64bit is now that 64bit operating systems have been out for a while now. Thanks in advance.

Vista 64 support is pretty good. You may still run into a few issues with drivers if you have older periphrials but the driver support is much better than when XP64 came out. There also some issues with software as well, namely the lack of firewalls. When/if zonealarm comes out with a 64bit version of their free firewall I will have everything I had in 32bit.

Out of curiousity...

Why the concern about Zone Alarm? In past, ok it's been a few years, It's been more hinderance than help on the PC's I've seen it on. Why even use a third party software firewall on Vista? From what I understand, the argument under XP was that XP's firewall was inbound protection only but Vista's is both inbound and outbound.

I don't know why anybody would want to put a bloated ZoneAlarm on their PC ,as well as pay for it .
Vista by default setting only blocks incoming,it can be set to block outgoing as well so not really any issue.

As to Vista x64 and drivers, its easy to check what drivers are available for your hardware, personally I've all the drivers for my hardware,as to software the main problems will be very old 16 bit software since Vista x64 does not support 16 bit software at all.

I've been generally pleased with Vistax64 aside from my home lan problems

In home use, only other qualm is that adobe flash isn't available (yet) for 64bit IE which, IMHO, is a little snappier than 32bit IE on Vistax64. But I'm stuck using 32bit because most websites nowadays has some flash going somewhere.

I'm running Vista 64 Home premium. It's working fine. I can utilize all my 4 Gig of ram but I still can't find the drive for my Canon scanner though (From what I read, I don't think Canon will release a 64bit version driver for that model). I have to boot to XP if I want to use my scanner which is a pain sometimes.

Vista ultimate 64 runs like a champ for me. The only driver issue i had was when i bought a cheap digital picture key chain from compusa. It was an off brand that didn't have a website (gearHead I think) so i couldn't find any drivers for it. They didn't even have any 32bit drivers available so i took it back for being a POS.

64 with 4gb runs like a banshee 🙂

I had 4 gigs on a WIN XP 32 system.. of course being able to see only 3.5 gigs... but it has no issues at all and that amount of RAM is overkill. despite that for the price I threw in another 4 gigs because RAM is so cheap now. So I installed XP64 and still have no issues.

I will say though photoshop is much snappier. It's still a 32 bit program... but the extra ram lets me keep the scratch disk off the hard drive.
