If you haven't played this yet - minimal spoilers but I'll try to give you an idea whether to buy it.

It's more an experience than a game. And the less you know probably the better.

If you are still intrigued - it's an incredible game. The downside warning I'd give is that it can be quite dark. So if disturbing is an issue - you should approach aware of that.

An alternative to playing is this very entertaining "Let's Play" - but of course it'd ruin the game see first.

I played this years ago when it was free, has much changed?

SPOLIERS AHEAD:

The last time I played Stanley had a very boring job in a very boring building, and eventually you got to some control tower and ended up outside the building, is there anything new other than that?

Loved it. Great game. I had fun trying things to find the various branches and endings.

I'm not familiar with the old version, but from what I've read quite a bit was added with alternatives to the version you played.

I'm in the same boat. I played the free version when it first hit Steam. It was neat, but not neat enough to spend money on.

I think the current one is and a steal for $2.99. 8 hours on the sale.

Or watch the 14-part video I linked for free and it's also great.

Ya, it's not the longest game, and not much replayability, but it's quite an experience.
