I just purchased a 80 mm case fan .. Tornado Maxx ... F5 from PcToys ..

Bad move .. the fan is way too loud .. yes it does get the job done in the sense that it keeps my system cool .. infact my problem of the CPU getting heated to about 60 degrees Celsius was fixed in the sense that it barely hits 45 degrees now but it is way too loud .. i mean my fiancee came over from the other room wondering what I had broken .. ha ha ..

any suggestions on good 80 mm fans .. hopefully a fan that is silent and still get the job done ..

thanks

Yup, no matter what you will do you will always have the battle of airflow versus sound. What you have to do is figure out how much you can day in and day out, and find something in that area. You should also keep in mind that 2 fans at a medium sound level that push as much air as a fan with high sound level are STILL more quiet the one.

You can always go the path of a rheobus and if things get to hot, turn up the speed and bear the noise until things cool down. That will probably be the popular consensus.

yeah .. but can anyone give me examples and names of a few fans which get loud when I load the computer but are low on sound otherwise .. like when surfing the net, using Microsoft Word, etc. .. basically the temperature of my computer controls the speed at which the fan may work .. brands and names of such fans will help me shop for a better one ..

thanks

Such fans exist and some mobos can control the fans...but the rheobus is the easiest way to do it.

The Panaflo L1A 80mm fan is a good all-around case fan that moves about 24 cfm and deals with restrictions better than average. Now, you got a Chenming case that has two fan ports in the rear, isn't that correct? Two Panaflo L1A's in the rear should keep the temperature reasonable. I have the Antec-branded version here at home, and I just use four of these super-quiet NMB's. At 5 fans for $11, it's hard to beat.

That company is pretty popular and has the rheobusses too: fan controllers They have rheostats that allow you to lower the voltage to your fans.

Any of the Panaflo fans give good airflow at a reasonable noise level. You can get the Panaflos just about anywhere Plycon, FrozenCPU etc....

A rheo buss is like the dimmer switch on the light in your kitchen or wherever. It would suit your needs very well. I added one and it made a difference. Turn the fans down low when youre surfing the web etc and crank em up when youre fraggin..

I say use panaflo intake and exhaust in a case with no unnecessary airflow restrictions. With good airflow you should not have overheating problems. Alleclectronics.com has panaflos for $4.50.

Funny thing - before I clicked on this thread, just by reading the title, I immediately thought: Tornado. :D

so .. any suggestions on fans ..

anyone have good experiences with Thermaltake Smart Case fan II .. how loud is it .. also .. is it good .. i guess i would prefer fans with thermal sensors which would stay quiet when i am not playing games .. but get loud .. upto an acceptable level when i am playing ..

OR

if there are any quiet fans (without the temperature control) which are good .. please suggest the names to me .. so that i can look into them as well .. my budget is no more than $20 ..

thanks

Thermaltake fans seem to be much louder than they are rated at a given airflow. That fan may start out quiet, but will soon be extremely loud as you seem to have high case temps. I would try to throw 2 panaflos in there. At full speed they are extremely quiet.

Got it .. but the problem is I only have enough space for 1 fan .. sucks that my case is so small that i can only put i total case fan in it ..

but i were to decide between the 2:

thermally controlled fans vs constant speed heat fans .. which one is better .. in terms of noise and effectiveness .. any suggestions on names of fans will be appreciated ..

thanks

Directron beat it. hehe. 5 for $10

and seeing as SVC is out of stock, it's even better.

Doh! :Q So they finally ran out... well, thank you for the Directron tip :D I should get some more for next fiscal years' computer builds while I can still get them for this kind of price.

Edit: the ThermalTake Smart Fan II's draw a staggering 8.4 watts of power, more than some of the gnarliest 120mm fans out there. I wouldn't recommend plugging them into a motherboard, that's for sure. If you want a manually-adjustable fan, the YS Tech 80mm adjustable fan is pretty nice and has a wide range of RPMs and airflow.

If you can only use one case fan, why not the Enermax adjustable? It's the quietest adjustable fan and you can just dial it in to where you need it to be.

I have one of those Tornado fans (not installed though). It was given to me when the person who bought it couldn't take the noise either! I hooked it up one day though, and that is one loud mofo! It sure moves some air too!

Yah, cheaper than SVC at any quantity since that's $5 flat shipping for unlimited small items. I have gotten better treatment at bestbyte than at SVC, who delayed shipping my purchase for 2 weeks and always gave me the run around when I called :|.

I got my NMBs in today, and (as I figured) the connector on these isn't the same as the standard 3 pin fan connectors. What's the best way around this situation. I mean, they FIT on there.. should I just leave them like that, maybe put some electrical tape around the connection, or does someone sell some sort of adapter... or should I just cut some old connectors off and splice them on the ends of the fans? Thanks.

I used some NMBs for awhile and I left them plugged in with their connector. Never had a problem.

My NMBs seem to fit standard 3-pin connectors, like those on my mobo. Not sure if/why yours are different?

Where did you buy them? What are the connectors like? A bit of tape or glue might be nice, especially if one is a HS fan or anything.

The white connector is a Vantec Stealth, the Black is the NMB.

The fit the connection, but the head is clearly not the idea one for a fan connection.

http://www.svc.com/fanandtemman.html fanspeed controllers. i have the nxp 201.

u can quiet any fan using this. u can use led fans too:) i have 4led fans connected to knob 1 alone. i rewired my psu fans to use the rheobus too. better to go with multiple low rpm fans then one high rpm fan. my chieftec has 5 80mm case fans alone. the svc led fans are ok. uv ones are kewl. uv led even better. if your case is lousy u might have to start cuttin holes. esp if the fan mounts have very little air flow. from my experience thermal control is a joke unless its been engineereed together with the components its being used iwth. like a power supply. otherwise the temperature changes that trigger speed don't get tripped when you want. most stay at 50% speed 99.9% of the time. the amount u'll spend on thermal control/speed control fans is notworth it. just get normal fans and hook to rheobus. each channel can support atleast a few normal fans. 21bux is pretty good.

if your case lacks mounts or decent mounts(jokingly tiny tiny little vent holes etc) if hacking lots and lots of holes in ur case is not for u, buy a new case. aluminum chieftec/antecs are good. lots of fans mounts, much space for ventilation. its either noise, or lots of low rpm fans. u gotta choose.
