As a music aficionado, I'd like to think I have discerning taste. I once sat down and thought about the greatest bands and artists that ever existed....

The Beatles
Pink Floyd
Miles Davis
The Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
...

and of course, The Smiths. The juxtaposition of charming melodies and charmingly melancholy lyrics with metaphors that would make your english teacher cry.

I don't know about my English teacher but that last sentence made me cry. :)

I think Johnny Marr is a genius, but I can only take so much of Morrissey's vocals (and lyrics) :)

The Smiths are definitely a great band. I guess I like them too since I own all their albums and Morrissey's solo albums too.

Well done. That's an example of the only dumb lyrics among their tracks. You can't argue that Morrissey's lyrics were sheer poetry. Johnny Marr is an ABSOLUTE genius. Who else would track 6+ layers of guitars? My god....

The whole aesthetic bears respect too. The name itself was chosen as a way to say that they represented the regular folk. Nothing more common than the "smiths". Perhaps the "jones"'es but, that's what they were aiming for. Anybody with a brain and a heart can see the the tragic beauty of the whole discography.

They might be dumb lyrics but I still chuckle everytime I listen to that song.....and although dumb it is a very true statement and rather funny :D.

Meat Is Murder

  • Heifer whines could be human cries
    Closer comes the screaming knife
    This beautiful creature must die
    This beautiful creature must die
    A death for no reason
And death for no reason is MURDER

And the flesh you so fancifully fry
Is not succulent, tasty or kind
    It's death for no reason
And death for no reason is MURDER

And the calf that you carve with a smile
    Is MURDER
And the turkey you festively slice
    Is MURDER
Do you know how animals die ?

    Kitchen aromas aren't very homely
It's not "comforting", cheery or kind
It's sizzling blood and the unholy stench
    Of MURDER

It's not "natural", "normal" or kind
The flesh you so fancifully fry
    The meat in your mouth
    As you savour the flavour
    Of MURDER

    NO, NO, NO, IT'S MURDER
    NO, NO, NO, IT'S MURDER
Oh ... and who hears when animals cry ?

If you like The Smiths then check out Idlewild, their last album definitely has some Smiths influences.
