Speaking to TV Line, Jean explained: 'The character that dies is portrayed by an actor who won an Emmy for playing that character.

'People who reported on it then reported we were killing an "iconic" character; I’d like to say it’s a great character, but I never used the word "iconic".'

Adding: 'It’s a terrific character and it [happens in] our premiere this coming year.'

I haven't been keeping up with The Simpsons episodes, since I don't have cable, DirectTV, or whatnot. If its not on Netflix or YouTube, I have to remember to Torrent it. And with Simpsons being a ~20min show, I'd usually rather just wait until I can grab the entire season in one go.

To be bigger than the Purple wedding it'll have to be a major character.

I think they're killing Marge.

Wow, one of these days I'll have to watch some episodes; haven't watched it in years. Simpson's on Netflix?

Hulu has 7 recent episodes. They show up a week after they air on TV. If you haven't seen it in a long time, prepare to be disappointed.

Probably Barney.

The Simpsons is a show that I have not regularly watched in a very long time but every so often I will catch one of the newer episodes and it still manages to get a few laughs from me.

This show has been coasting for 15-plus seasons now. It is never funny and hasn't been insightful in decades. Please just end it now.

Along with Kelsey Grammar’s super-villain Bob, in 2004 Dan Castellaneta won an Emmy for being the voice of ‘Various Characters’, which blows the list wide open again.

There is cause to believe that Sideshow Bob will be the character to meet his end. Executive Producer Matt Selman told sources: “What we told the performer is, ‘This does not mean the end of your participation in The Simpsons.”

wat does this mean?!

It means that the character that the actor is voicing will die, but not the other characters he/she is voicing. So actor is still part of the show, The Simpsons.

That doesn't mean anything at all. Perhaps, a new character will be voiced by that person. Or, their voice will be used as a ghost for that character. All they are saying is "the character you are portraying is dying, but that doesn't mean you're fired".

I am still going with Rabbi Krusty

The quote could also be read as implying that it involves a voice actor who currently does only one character. They wouldn't have to assure someone like Castellaneta or Azaria that their participation isn't ending just because they killed off one character.

Or that there will be a new role / roles with the voice actor.

I haven't watched The Simpsons in a long, long time as a series. Once or twice a year I will catch an episode, and I still think the show is great; the best "family friendly" cartoon, still. I still think it's the only middle-ground between shitty, overrated kids cartoons that require zero thought (ala SpongeBob variety) and South Park, which is obviously an adult kind of grotesque awesome or stupidity, based on the episode.

They've done a good job at keeping it appealing to all ages and avoiding toilet humor for the sake of just putting out episodes (which South Park seems to be increasingly doing, unfortunately)

that's how I read it - if that's the case, anyone wanna take a guess at who's eligible to be killed off?
