the simpsons dont live in any one state.......their state is a combination of all states.....just like springfield is a combination of a small hick town and a metropolis.

The Simpsons the actors are from kentucky(I take it you are talking about the behind the laughter episode)....that doesn't mean that the show takes place there. There's an ocean. Do you know of any oceans in kentucky? :)

they "is" from Kentucky, huh? Right...

They admitted a ton of times it's just a gimmick. They don't live in any one state, but at least they fooled you.

And I have seen the same episode in rerun that said they were from another state. However, I DO believe they are from Kentucky.

They are not from Kentucky and the location could have been revealed such as in the episode "Behind the Laughter".. However, The Simpsons are from Springfield and that sums up all the Springfields all over the US. There is no exact location.

Well, since Springfield has access to the ocean, it has to be on one of the coasts.... and Kentucky is landlocked.

Springfield is suppose to be the epitome of the average American town. There are some shows where they thrown in stupid statements that aren't true (in terms of the show) and are just for the sake of that episode (ex. Halloween specials.) One of the running gags that sometimes have is to not give away the state.

Marge (on phone): "Ohi...a Maude!"

Kentucky has a Simpsonville, Shelbyville and Springfield pretty close to each other.

Guys, NO state fits the Simpson's Springfield anywhere near 50%, much less 100%.

Matt Groening picked the name "Springfield" because it's the first or second most common town name in America. It was created with the intent that they could morph the town into any place they wanted it to be. The minute they gave the town a state, they would have been forced into conforming it to meet the general properties of that state and town.

The state is never mentioned, so that they may morph Springfield into any town and any location they please. They've had Springfield morphed into a hollywood-esque location before, complete with a Springfield sign in the hills, theme shaped restaurants, and a shady celebrity history. The view from the hills above Springfield looks like the view from Mulholland drive in LA. (This makes sense, because the writers are in LA, and write about what they're familer with) They've even jumped on a boat and been in international waters within minutes.

They've had Springfield be a short drive from TN, New York, the ocean, the desert and midwest style corn fields and farms. They've even had Springfield as a port town complete with light houses and piers in a number of episodes. (Including the one with Mr Burn's boat in international waters)

Springfield is the Visa of towns. It's everywhere you want it to be. There is NO WAY you can name a specific state, because the town morphs every week.

Although I knew that Springfield does not have a specific state associated with it, I never thought about the points that AmusedOne bought up.

Good post, AmusedOne.

It's a lot like the generic city (complete with "USA" license plates) and cubicled-office portrayed in the movie Office Space.

It's Every-City, USA. And Every-Company, Corporate America.

Exactly. In fact, does Office Space ever say what that company produces?
