The shot: Good because you only have to take it once a month.

The pill: In my experience, the pill has MUCH gentler side effects than the shot.

Basically it boils down to.. your girlfriend.

Everybody is different, and everybody reacts differently to the different methods of birth control...

Your girlfriend should speak to whomever she's getting the birth control from.

The IUD is particularly unpopular in the states because when it was introduced in the (60's?) it had an organic element that was conducive to bacteria growth... A cotton string IIRC. This lead to severe complications in some patients.. it has been revised and is "safe" now but americans tend to hold onto bad press a long time...

I don't know many girls on the shot, but most I do have been pleased with it, particularly the whole no periods thing.

As far as advantages and disadvantages, well the shot is alot harder to screw up than a pill. On the down side its a shot, and if she does react poorly to it like some women do she's stuck with it for 3 months and then a maybe a couple more weeks until her hormones level out.

I was under the impression that if your GF was on the shot/BC you really didnt need to wear a rubber. They are almost 100% arnt they?

Personally I never felt safe with "almost." But to each his own. And of course pill/shot does not protect against diseases too if you need to worry about that.

I think it's 95-99% depending on where you get your data... no one wil ever say a method of birth control is 100% percent effective... think of the malpractice suits... :)

There are more reasons to wear a rubber than just preventing pregnancy... We should have a poll as to the most "comfortable/unnoticeable"...

the pill is 99.9% effective when used properly. (taken every day at a consistent time). Women who get preggie on the pill usually skipped a dose. Personally, I'd want my partner to be on the shot just because that prevents her from forgetting. Accidentally or on purpose.

The shot has more adverse side effects, and has the most discomfort when you first start using it. Side effects include weight gain, terrible mood swings, unpredictable menstral bleeding, stomach cramps, and apathy. It also has been known to make conception difficult up to a year or two after the woman has stopped it.

The benefits of the shot are that you only to take it 4 times a year, and some women enjoy it because it eliminates their period. They don't have it anymore. Some women enjoy that, some don't.

There's also Ortho-Evra, the Birth Control Patch.

My wife uses that and it's worked marvelously. Not only do we not have kids (;)), but the side effects are very minimal. The only thing she has gotten are minor stomach pains when she first started. Otherwise, she's doing great! No weight gain or anything!

I'd seriously consider the patch if I were you... or your girlfriend -- it's not for YOU, right?

the company that invented the pill came out with a patch. You put it on your thigh or butt for a week at a time for three consecutive weeks, on the fourth week, you keep it off and you have a period. i think this is a great alternative to the shot...and the pill and is just as effective!
