The SETI servers are either...

Megatomic

Lifer
1. Overloaded and in need of upgrades
2. Poorly maintained and need better admins
3. Both of the above

Which is it? I get more of these:
HTTP 500 - Internal server error
when I click on my stats than anything else. Is this normal?

Nearly 5 million users, a decent percentage of whom are stats hounds(including me) trying to pull stats 24/7, plus team stats, oh and lets not forget serving many, many thousands of work units a day plus accepting and verifying results.

Yeah, I guess you can be miffed if YOUR stats aren't there RIGHT NOW everytime you want them.

chill out, hit reload, and if that doesnt work, give it a minute and reload again. It works , honest, try it. 🙂

I see what you mean zaph but it's not like SETI is doing US a favor, it's our clock cycles they need not vice versa. But I guess I should be a little more grateful, it is fun to participate. I suppose that is thanks enough.

Hey man I agree with you! They do an awesome job for the amount of users. I am just a stat hoe and want my stats quick! (Plus the group statistics should be done soon so we can see our lead over BBR and HP)

There are almost 5 million users, but does anyone know how many are active? Last I checked only about 800 or the 3100 of the TeAm are active.
It can't be anywhere near 5 million active.

Try that again... 5 million users - a FULL THIRD of which haven't even crunched a single work unit!

Go ahead - try it for yourself, create a new SETI account, crunch just ONE work unit and see what percentage of the users you've completed more work than! 😕

Somebody go through and delete those suckers and the database and stats should be WAY easier to maintain. 😉

Word.

Zaph missed the crucial point ,S@H is run by a handful of volunteers!:Q

Xemus
Last I checked their are about 1/2 a million active users

I totally agree! How long have we been asking for that? It sure would make the project a lot more legit if they'd at least remove all of the members who've never turned in a WU. Just downloading the client or getting a WU assigned doesn't qualify you as a participant (IMO). 🙂

Excellent point I think we all need to remember. 🙂

Donations and volunteers are all that fund the SETI@Home project. And if anyone thinks it's bad now they should've seen it before. I run a SetiQ to monitor my fleet now. In the past it used to be because of the all too frequent outages. They're not perfect but they're a lot better than they used to be. 🙂

its discouraging when you are trying to recruit for your team and you give someone a link that only works about 2 hours out of the day....makes people think the project is flaky and that its not worth the time. the only way to be successful at this project is to run some kind of caching program and be connected in some way with a server running seti queue. its just discouraging that they dont have some kind of mirror system setup so that the stats pages could be on a different host or something because their uptime for their webspace is putrid at best! i understand that the system is ran by volunteers and donations but the fact of the matter is that the issues remain and whether they are paid or not is irrelevant.

I would like to see them create an Archive of Past Seti Users.

Into that Archive should go every User that has not been active in the last (for argument's sake) six-months.

The only members that count (for any and all teams) are the "active" members.

Now that would be interesting to see. All teams would be effected proportionally.

That DOES sound interesting. Does the TeAm have any pull at SETI?

Yeah, but when recruiting new people to Seti 5 million users sounds impressive.....

Except it would only take an extra few words to make it mean something more. Saying you have 5 million users is just blah, blah, blah.. saying you have 3.3 million participants who've successfully completed the work assigned to them says quite a bit more. 😉

I as well think they do a decent job.
for the amount it works (90% of the time) I'd say is pretty good... a LOT of traffic to their server, gotta give 'em credit.

Please forgive my earlier tirade, it was early and the morning caffine jolt hadn't really kicked in yet, and i was still in sleepy/grumpy mode.

Yes i did miss a very crucial point , the project is volunteer-run. 🙂

/me reminds himself not to post when grumpy

"The Space Sciences Laboratory suffered a power failure last night, the
servers are being run through a consistency check process before returning
to service."
Ok, this is from BOINC beta-list & webpage, but Seti@home is running from the same offices so. 😉

From the graph, it looks like seti data-server was down 3 hours. That the web-server was down longer isn't so important, since to find out how many wu you've crunched is just to return 1 wu and see that response you get.

In BOINC, the default is to sort by "resent average". So if someone stops crunching, this will slowly drop to 0... So if you'll look this way on the stats, the teams will most likely jump around a lot more than today.

Actually I think they've just had a bad patch recently ,its not normally this bad.I assume their busy with BOINC.
But I do understand what your saying
