"the semaphore timeout period has expired"

I've got a friend who is getting the following message about one of his local hard drives.

"G:\ is not accessible the semaphore timeout period has expired."

after it says that the drive is no longer available.
Any ideas?

Try a disk checker like "Data Adviser" from ontrack (bottom of the page) and see what it says. What type of HDD is it?
