My pops was so cheap when it came to buying computers. Up until 1998 we had a Model 55 PS2 386 with the co-processor installed to make it a 386 "enhanced". A whole 4mb of ram and a 60mb hard drive baby! He bought it used from his friend with a whole bunch of software. I used to blow up the OS trying to install games that were not meant to run on a pc that slow with a hard drive that small. I managed to get a hacked copy of Doom on there and it was playable but you had to shrink the screen size down to like 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches.
In 1998 he bought our first new computer in a while and even took me shopping for it to help pick it out. We got a Packard Bell Pentium 233 w/MMX, 24mb of ram and it cost him $1000. I thought I was the baddest mofo around, lol. Of course my pops being cheap wouldn't buy the SVGA monitor. No no no. The 256 color VGA monitor we had at home was good enough! We limped along with that until my older brother bought me an SVGA monitor for Christmas. Best present ever!!! 16bit color was oh so beautiful.
That pc lasted until about 2001 when I built my first home made pc. That's when I joined Anandtech to get help figuring out why the friggin thing kept freezing up. Those were the days.

Yeah, I started watching Screen Savers just after Patrick replaced her. I'm pretty sure she got moved to Extended Play (now a crapified version called Xplay).

Clips like these make me sad to remember how much they ruined the show and TechTV in general. I watched it until a little after they moved "upstairs" to their loft set. Then Patrick left and I gave up on it completely and then it just went downhill from there.

Yes, Kate did go to Extended Play. It was a horrible move on TechTV's part, as she clearly wasn't a gamer. Watching Adam's face after some of of the stuff she said, was priceless.

That monitor is still in demand...I believe that's the 24" Sony.

I have a similar case still Addtronics.

It also wasn't technically the ultimate PC for the day, but the ultimate the average person could buy. $4500 was the sane hi-end back then.

My Apple //e was about $3600 loaded in the early 80's.

An IBM PS/2 Model 80 (386 class) came in at $20k+ about 10 years later with monitor.

You do realize I was the FAQ maintainer, really the creator, from 1992 to around 2002 on these. IBM had a copy of it even they used.

The BASE model 80 at the end of the 80's was $11k. The package that included a decent HD, memory and the 8514 monitor was a total of $20K+ (I can't find the IBM article, but I believe $27k)

The Model 70 B series with a 486 that came out in 1990 was $17k for the PC only.
