yes let me just walk down the grocery store, get a potato, bring it back to my desk, slice it real thin, take the slices home, bake and or fry them, and bring my diy chips back to my desk.

what is your point? do you really think a steak at a restaurant costs $40 for the meat? no, it costs a lot less. you are paying for the final product and how it was prepared.

same with a potato chip. you are paying for the final product, which consists of potato, oil, spices, marketing, packaging, and whatever else is in it.

More often than not - I'd say it's a rule, but I imagine there is an exception or two out there somewhere.

You have to factor in your personal time cost/pay. Sure, you can buy the sum ingredients, in bulk (and likely only in bulk, mind you), but how much time will it take for you to take those ingredients and make a comparable product?

What would you say that time cost you? Could you have been making money at that time? Could you have been doing something else that is more valuable with your time?

Believe it or not, that's a good thing for us. It's inert gasses (nitrogen usually) which helps preserve the chips, and, even better, helps keep the chips in good shape during shipping. The precious chips could be crushed without that cushion of air!

Have you ever made homemade potato chips? They are delicious, I make them on rare occasions. .
Every eat them the next day? They taste just like disappointment.

I don't know what magic they put in those bags (yes, I know it is nearly pure nitrogen) but I can't replicate it at home.

Then go buy Pringles instead. The bag is also the protection for the chips. You need spare volume for them to move around in and not get completely destroyed (as opposed to the only 75% destroyed the get these days).
