The Samsung Galaxy Precedent is a piece of crap

Well, the phone isn't THAT bad, but it's storage space is ridiculously small. If the default, factory-installed apps keep updating at this rate, my memory will be completely filled up. Filled up by stock applications that I can't even uninstall in the first place (without hacking, that is).

To give you an idea: The Galaxy Precedent has a staggeringly-small 161MB of available storage space. Most of that is filled up by default apps that get packaged with the OS. Yesterday I had 26MB of free space. Today that dropped down to 16MB of space, simply because YouTube downloaded an update. I can't uninstall Youtube. (I guess I could uninstall the updates, but I'm not sure what kind of complications will arise from using severely outdated versions of apps.)

The only additional apps I've installed are Tapatalk, Reddit, and Swiftkey (none of which are exactly storage-hogs).

I'm disappointed. This is my first foray into smartphones, and I had to purchase the lowest-end Android phone possible. I should've actually done some research first before buying it... so I know I'm partially at fault here. If the phone was still within it's 30-day return period, I'd take it right back to Walmart. Unfortunately I've had the phone for ~3 months now, and by the time I realized how much it sucks, it was already too late.

So here I'm stuck with a severely mediocre phone. I'm tempted to cut my losses and drop the cash on a Samsung Galaxy SII or something. Maybe I could sell the Precedent on Craigslist or Ebay. It's a Straight Talk phone though, which would likely make it harder to get rid of.

I'm curious though: I wonder what would happen if I called my carrier (Straight Talk) and complained, saying "Hey, this phone is so lacking that I literally can't install updates anymore for the factory-installed applications. My memory is full after owning the phone for only 3 months. I can't even receive two text messages without getting an error saying I can't receive anymore and need to clear my inbox." Maybe they'd give me a discount on a new phone, or even better, take the damn thing back.

As for the rest of the phone's specs, they're... sustinent. Android 2.2. 800MHz processor. The phone struggles with basic tasks like browsing Facebook, and the built-in web browser. But the real killer is, by far, is the ridiculously meager storage space.

Sorry... I just needed somewhere to vent. What to do, what to do.

see how much they go for on ebay. decide if you want to add any $ of your own on top of that, then tell us what your budget is. there are LOTS of better android phones that are reasonably priced.

The appeal of straight talk is to get an unlocked/used phone and use it on their network. Their selection of phones is among the worst. sorry you had to find out first hand.

They're pretty much just attaching the Galaxy moniker to everything they make. Its now a useless label.

OP, you need to root and do two things:

1) Use titanium backup to integrate updates into the system ROM (save that internal storage for your apps!)

2) use apps2sd if you want even more space

Thanks. It looks like the Galaxy Precedent for Straight Talk is going anywhere from $50 to $80 on ebay.

Service-wise, Straight Talk has been great to me. I've been using them for a few years and I've found them to be extremely reliable where I live. My previous Straight Talk phones have been solid as well (although they were all "dumb phones"). Unfortunately I went too cheap when buying my first smartphone though.

I guess I'll bite: What's a good, unlocked GSM Android phone under $300, that has an acceptable amount of storage space (in the gigabytes ffs :p ), and doesn't lag while doing basic tasks and light gaming?

I'm willing to take value over raw performance. If a $300 phone is more powerful than a $250 phone, but the $250 phone is better bang/buck, then I'll gladly take the $250 phone.

And lastly... reliability. Reliability is good too. Thanks in advance.

you might be able to get a used galaxy nexus for under $300. are you using an at&t sim or a tmobile sim on straight talk?

here's a gnex for $295: http://swappa.com/listing/TYQ792/view

Yeah, using a Straight Talk sim is what I'm considering.

Thanks for the link. I'm not too keen on buying used goods, but I'll consider it. I'll keep my eyes open for deals in the coming weeks.

That's pretty hilarious, given that they sell it for $80 on their site.

Anyway, you should probably have asked here beforehand. A used Infuse or Atrix or even S2 would have been a much better deal. The Nexus is a nice choice now...

No shit.
You could have posted here first before purchasing and we'll have told you that. ;)

Get a Galaxy Nexus. Eventhough it's $50 more than what you're budgeting, it's worth it.
Like you, I don't buy used phones.

I know, guys, I know... I'll never buy another cell phone without asking around first.
