Now you're just being ridiculous.

You said that I started another religion thread. If atheism isn't a relgion, than how is this a religion thread?

I'm just trying to follow the logic.

I bring this up since many people do in fact think that atheism is a religion.

This thread is about the state of atheism. Why do you bring up Christianity?

Because the laughability of Christianity is what is making atheism grow so quickly. The state of atheism is GREAT and we have the great pedophile in the sky to thank for it.

I don't. But when you start a thread discussing the state of atheism you know religion is going to worm its way into the discussion.

Okay, let's assume I was wrong about Einstein.

Would you say that all of these Christian thinkers are idiots?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_thinkers_in_science

No assumption needed. Plainly put you are flat out wrong. Just like your terrible quotes about the founding father from the that terrible Christian propaganda website.

I'm not denying that there have been many great people who have added to human understanding through the last few decades that were Christians. However, what does that mean and who gives a shit?

There were plenty more "great thinkers" who predate Christianity and were in other religions in other countries. Damn the Chinese were playing with gunpowder while Christianity was wallowing in the mud. Literally.

Just because there are outliers to the exception does not prove the case for any religion. That's a really sad correlation there.

I never quoted the founding fathers. You're confusing me with someone else.

You seem to be deviating from others here who think that everyone who holds a religious belief is an idiot. I commend you for breaking away from the group think here.

If we can take this discussion to a higher plane (which won't be hard to do), why do you think there are so few atheists?

Life is hard. Life also is seemingly pointless. It's quite unnerving to many to have the belief that the universe is just random particles and matter interacting with each other. They need a sense of purpose, a moral compass, a direction for living. Religion is the easy and simplist answer to that.

Modern physics and biology attempts to answer those questions to a degree, but as you can imagine, most people don't have the mental capacity to dwelve into those topics, nor do they have the time, patience to even care.

Trust me, it isn't your belief in god that makes us question your intelligence.

Yah, but just because you can be wrong about something because you are blinded by tradition or faith doesn't mean you cannot follow down other roads of thought.

However, the majority of men on that list were not major followers. Some were even persecuted. Many started as Christians but ended up believing less as they learned more. Just because you are taught and believe Christianity at one point, as I was, does not mean you stay a Christian until the day you die. Nor does it mean all your great works in life were derived from Christian influence. Very few on that list I would have categorized as "devout" believers.

There is a fine line in that.

Good. We agree that one cannot be classified as an "idiot" based solely on ones belief or disbelief in God.

Nope. I work with a Jew, a Muslim, an Evangelical fundie, a Unatarium, and a Catholic. Out of all them, only the Catholic is the only one to ever try to bring up religion once in awhile. Older hispanic lady type.

Anyhow, everyone I work with is smart people in their field of studies. Just because one is indoctrinated into a belief system does not mean that they still can not have a critical thinking mind. They just don't use those techniques on everything. If they don't want to then that is fine by me. I'm not going to push it so long as they don't try to question my atheism.

The knife cuts both ways. You seem to think that everyone who's atheist is rejecting your god. You also seem to think that nearly everyone on here is atheist. Most atheists don't really care who your god is or who your neighbors god is.

You start these threads asking why people are against Christianity or 'proving' that atheism is in decline but you know full well the responses you're going to get. Everyone knows you're trying to stir the pot - no matter how much you try and distance yourself by saying you're just asking. Cut the crap already. We know you're a Christian and you know who the more outspoken atheists are. Hooray.

I bring this up since many people do in fact think that atheism is a religion.
Many people also think that the earth was created in 6 days about 10,000 years ago. They're all morons.

Generally speaking, atheism is a religion like baldness is a hair color.

More specifically, atheism is not a religion for the same reason that theism is not a religion: they are attributes of worldviews. Clearly, Islam an Christianity are not the same religion, but they are both theistic. Secular Humansim and Mahayana Buddhism are not the same worldview, but both are atheistic.

Having said all that, when talking about atheism and contrasting it with other worldviews, the general topic is "religion" since that is something easy for others to recognize. It doesn't follow from the fact the subject of atheism pertains directly to religious conversation that atheism is a religion.

When I was really drunk in college one night I went and peed on the megachurch's sign next to my apartment. I had like 6 people honk in approval when I was doing it.

/adds nothing to this thread

this shows your lack of comprehension. yes, there are some hard-core folks here who simply equate religion with idiocy. Those people are foolish, imo.

It is not simply your belief in fairies that, in my mind, makes you an idiot. It's your utter lack of reasoning, constant failure to make a vlaid point, and absolute insistence on posting biased and highly flawed links/data to back up your fragile claims.

that is what makes you an idiot. Your belief is not the same as those like Thomas Aquinas, John Donne, whomever, because you are a simple troll.

Now, back to Bill Murray. Do you think he prefers cottage cheese or farmer's cheese?

Cottage cheese is fuckin' disgusting, and I don't appreciate you and Platypus trying to further your agendas every time real cheese gets mentioned in a thread. Hard cheese or GTFO....
