The Sable got Totaled, What to replace it?

My dad has a 94 Merc Sable with about 106k miles on her. Due to god sending down his vengence in the form of a hail storm direcred at mine and my dads car we now have to once again go car shopping. I was telling him since my brother and I both have cars now to use the 5500 they're gonna give him and get a smaller car, since we already have another tarus. Im open to all sugguestions on this since its my dads car and were not looking for anything special. By that i mean i will consider foriegn cars a possibility ( except chrysler!!! ). Whats a decent sized, at LEAST cavalier size, car that my dad could purchase that is RELIABLE ( the key word here ) and probably wont see much time in the shop, but at the same time he can look somewhat respectable in. Once again the budget here is ~ $5500 and he probably wont want to go much past that. THANKS!
 
Hardly, Mitsubishi makes most of their parts. The same mitsubishi that was exploited for not reporting defects and recalls for the past 25 years!
