The Ring

I know it's old and 98% of ATOT has seen it but horror flicks aren't my bag, baby. I figured since I hadn't seen it and my family wanted to rewatch it I would check it out. It wasn't so bad I wanted to gouge my eyes out with a pen but it wasn't all that good either. I thought Gothica was better, which isn't saying much. The only really frightening part was the way the teen girl in the closet looked in the flashback her mother had.
Maybe I am biased because as I said the horror genre is just meh with me. I finally got the references parodied in Scary Movie 3 at least. 😉
What is the consensus of opinion here?

I liked it. Finally a non-cheesey and creepy horror movie.

The movie was hardly horror IMO. The only horror was actually trying to sit through the entire thing.

I like Signs a lot better. If you want a creepy atmospheric horror Signs is much better at it than Ring.

I think creepy is the perfect term for it. The scene you refer to with her in the closet is the most notable... great make-up/costume work there... the image sat in my head for days. The other freaky part is when she climbs out from the tv and comes at you slowly... then you blink and she skips a few steps and appears closer. Chills... chills down my spine.

Signs was terrible and predictable.

Gothika was a prdicatable, rip-off piece o'cr@p.

I definitely enjoyed The Ring and was a great movie for it's genre. If you don't think twice about walking around in the dark after seeing that movie something is wrong with you.

Everyone in the theater flipped out when she zooped forward. It was also tense when she was watching the video at the father's house because I KNEW someone would pop up behind her, it was just a matter of when

All I wanted to do was shake Mel Gibson's character and tell him to get a f^cking gun!! It's an alien invasion you asshat steal a shotgun, break into the gunshop, get a crowbar just do something except hide in the basement. 😛

The deadliest weapon they used was that baseball bat. Maybe I've watched too many action movies. 🙂

Uhhhh. Maybe it was the fact that I watched it alone at night. But that movie scared me. And after watching it, I didn't like looking at TVs that were turned off 🙁

LOL. Don't pop unlabeled tapes into your VCR at a summer cabin either! 😛

I liked The Ring more than Ringu (Japanese counterpart), and I liked The Ring much more than a lot of the 'horror' movies that are out nowadays. I think the proper genre for this is 'thriller', due to the fact that most horor movies are meant to be funny and slasheriffic. Slasher != scary!

Anyways, The Ring and The Others were two pretty darned good movies.

Go back to your Freddy vs Jason and Alien 4 movies. The Ring was cool.

No thanks. They were good for their time but I can't stand them much anymore. Like I said I am not much into these types of movies to begin with so I am a bit biased.

Yeah at the foot of my bed is a tv... sucked for many nights on end.

the ring was a huge let down. i was expecting something actualy scary or at the least kinda creepy, it was just boreing. the texas chainsaw masacre remake was better and that was a POS. for the most part good horror movies are rare. seven was the last decent one i can remember i'm hopeing that Saw will be good when it comes out.

Not too bad of a movie, but not very scary. Personally I thought Signs was scarier, even if the ending sucked to no end. I'm talking world class suckage here.

But you can't really listen to me, I thought the Mothman Prophecies was pretty scary. Maybe that's because I watched it with one other person, late at night in an empty theater and she kept grabbing me when something scary happened. Nothing wrong with that of course (😉), but it scared the crap out of me, getting grabbed right when something scary happened.

It's more the atmosphere than anything else, I think. Probably why I didn't find the Blair Witch Project at all scary (well, that or it just sucked).
