I didnt read any previous posts......but what is needed to keep yourself alive is that, if you watch the tape you must make a photocopy and show someone else. Then that person must also make a copy and show someone else.

You can call her (the reporter) selfish in the fact that she saved her son, when his death could end the whole "ring". I think the films title has a dual meaning, the ring of the well and the "ring" of people that will see the movie.

This was only the second movie in my life Ive walked out on. I had to wake people up to leave the aisle.

The first movie I walked out on was 1987's Born on the 4th of July with Tom Cruise.

What ticks me off is that since all Rachel had to do was make a copy and get someone to watch it (she should have made a divx movie and posted it on Anand's), then most of the rest of the movie is rendered pointless. It's like I got tricked into watching all the middle part when it didn't even matter.

When the little freako boy says "she never sleeps", it means that the proper burial and laying her to rest won't stop her. It's trying to put this surprise twist on the traditional dogma of ghost stories, where the main character has to correct the wrong so the ghost can rest in peace. Since Samara doesn't sleep, this won't work on her. I think the dialogue just needed some tweaking there.

I did find it to be pretty scary and creepy and it messed me up for a couple days, although there were a couple of cheap BOOO!!!! shots at the audience. I thought the messed up death effects of the victims were overdone and detracted from the film -- a more subtle makeup job would have been better. I did thoroughly enjoy the tape itself and much of the cinematography was excellent.

It was pointless because it didn't do anything. Rachel's oddysey to the island and all the history and story she found out about didn't make any difference. She could have sat home and played Starcraft the whole 7 days, not died, seen that dude die, and then arrived at the conclusion that she lived because she made a copy. The only clue (that I saw) to the copy idea was Aden's line that Samara wanted the story to be told, and that happened indepently of Rachel's trip.

what pissed me off was that the entire time all anybody had to do was grab that little girl and
spank her until she stop popping out of people's television.

I can't believe you didn't understand the bit about getting her out of the well.

Misdirection.
Getting her out of the well had nothing to do with anything, had she not shown the tape to Aidin (sp?) then she still would have died.
Aidin did not show anyone the tape, therefor he died.
Thats why she had her son make the copy, so he wouldn't die.

The whole point was to take you through the story of what happened to her, then realize (when you would have sworn they were about to roll credits) that it, in fact, was NOT the point, the point was there is no way to stop her, nothing can be done, you can only pass the tape on to another and hope that it dies with them.

The reason I am suprised you didn't get it is because, look at the movie, you bounce from thinking the mother was insane, to the father, to the daughter, to the mother, then back to the daughter, they were all about misdirection in that movie. With a good plotline behind it.

Oh and yeah, Naomi Watts is SUCH a hottie, I love her accent :)

The oddysey to the island DID make a difference...I have a feeling that releasing Samara from the well will play a plot point in the future, which includes a Part 2 if the remake does well (which it already has). I agree that the twist on the typical "satiate the ghost" story was a bit of a 6th Sense climax ripoff (what you thought was happening really didnt), but it will serve a purpose...People on a few Ring forums have speculated what actually releasing her from the well did, but its all opinion at this point, until we see a sequel.

No fair! You have insider knowledge!

Being unfamiliar with the story line, I hadn't thought about a sequel, so I see your point now. However, I was just stating what I felt as I walked out of the theater. I don't want to suggest that the creators should have "dumbed down" the movie for people who hadn't read the books or seen the other movies, yet I still feel that since a majority of the viewers have not, a few more clues would have helped.

just saw the movie myself. man, creepy stuff. i have a few questions of my own:

1) why did the boy call his mom by her name? i was confused as to whether or not he was her son by the way they seem to interact on such an impersonal level.

2) how did the boy draw the picture of katie dying a week before it happened? how is it that this boy hears samara while no one else does? didn't he hear her before he saw the tape?

3) why didn't rachel stop noah's gf from going up? personal motive?

4) in the beginning katie opened the door, screamed and she died. her friend went to the mental hospital. where was she when katie died? she just dissappeared to give katie a chance to die. typical american horror movie :(

Ok I just got the Ring 2 (jap) from my cousin and suppously it explains a lot of stuff that happened in the first *SPOILER* Apparently Rachel was hallucinating when she was able to pick the fly from the tape and when her nose was bleeding. I will update when I watch the tape :)
